Hi to the new and old on the board, just thought it time to add a new topic that seems to get rehashed over and over again. I'm sure everyone here is familiar with the 1929 murder/suicide of Charlie Lawson and his family. Thought I would start a new thread that would solely provide information and thoughts on this particular topic. For those that don't know. This incident had nothing to do with Payne Road and because their is a thread on Payne road please direct all those topics there. This thread is solely for the purpose of those interested in the Charlie Lawson Murders....Look forward to your post here. Now, Lets begin, for those that don't know Charlie Lawson was a tobacco farmer who lived in Stokes County, North Carolina. On Christmas Day, 1929, for reasons nobody knows he shot and bludgeoned to death his wife Fannie, and 6 of his 7 children. His oldest son Arthur was sent to the store to buy shotgun shells. There has never been an explanation as to why Charlie went berserk that day and killed his entire family. Some say he had an accident prior to the killings with a maillot. He hit himself in the head and suffered severe headaches. Some say he molested and got his oldest daughter pregnant and he couldn't live with the shame of it. There are so many questions to this tragedy. Please feel free to add any responses or questions.

Thanks for posting this hycolakegal!
My personal opinion is that the Lawson murders have been absorbed into the Payne Rd legends. There are some stories out there that are too similar.
Will be interesting to see what everyone else's take on this is!

Sun. the 4th, myself, my mom and some members from another group are going to the Lawson family graveyard. Once I have been there, maybe a few from the group would be intrested in going. Supposedly a lady from the other group has special permission from surviving family members to be there. We are going early afternoon though.
On another note, I was reading on another website that another theory is that Dillinger really commited the murders. Odd concept. A friend of mine has the DVD of A Christmas Family Tragedy and the book White Christmas Bloody Christmas. I'm looking forward to reading them.
I don't know why so many people confuse Payne Rd. and Lawson murders. Maybe because they both involve a man who died in the late 20's/early 30's in Stokes county. The Lawson house was on Brook-Cove Rd.

I've never been able to actually document anything violent in the payne rd area. Maybe just looking in the wrong place.
What stories have you heard?

Look at the Payne Rd. topic. There is lots of others with accounts on Payne Rd. Myself, I felt a little bizarre, but nothing much. Like I said the only thing that freaked me out was when a deer jumped out of a feild and tried to ram my van! That was about it. Of course, those in the van with me were too chicken to get out. That's why I'm hoping to go again sometime soon!

We went down as teenagers....even went through the house. (Not the smartest thing in the world, considering it was owned by a woman who worked for the Sheriff's Dept lol)...nothing really weird happened then either.... Oh, and I have a pic of that house too in case no one's familiar with it! Gorgeous old place...I adore old houses. Pretty typical farmhouse of the area, definately not the "plantation" it is made out to be in many of the stories.

That one came from an old book about Ghosts of NC; can't remember the exact name, scanned it quite a while ago.

I know I don't live to far from where the Lawson house once stood. But I have never been, where is it? Is it around Germanton or Walnut Cove? The last I heard of the house is that the wood from it was made into a covered bridge. Where is the bridge located? I have been to the grave and it just really creeped me out knowing the history of what happened to these people and what might have been going through Charlie's mind at the time and what the scene might have looked like. The only thing that really scared me is that when I went to sleep that night I had a dream that the Lawson's were after me. I have no idea why, but all I remember is Charlie chasing me with an ax. I haven't been down there since they made it private property.

The former Lawson property is now completely off limits. A family from out of state recently bought it, and they have posted the property, and are apparently fencing it in. They want NO visitors related to this story. The driveway is right beside Watts Road on the Brook Cove Rd. end. But, as I said, it's vigorously protected now. You can't even go to the bridge partially built from the cabin. By the way, angel, that pic of the Edwards house from Payne Road is in TRIAD HAUNTINGS, by Burt Calloway and Jennifer Fitzsimmons. They have it at Barnes & Noble. Incidentally, Burt did the first edit on my firsat book.

Man, that kind of sucks...I guess some people just want the story to die and let it go. But no matter what its always going to interest people. I guess its something that will always be a mystery on what really happened on that day.

The new owners care NOTHING about the Lawson story. Honestly, in their spot, I'd be a little miffed too. People crawling all over my land, peeping in windows at all hours of the night (some people don't realize the actual Lawson Cabin is long gone), SOMEBODY would have experieced a butt-kicking a long time ago. Also, these people were caught completely unawares in the interest of people in their new property. It was not disclosed to them just what had taken place on the property all those years ago. They only found out about the notoriety of the place AFTER buying it, and catching trespassers on the land.

Well, I can kind of see that it would be annoying people coming around all the time if I lived there. Lol I actually thought about driving by today until you said that.

Whatever you do, DON'T go up their driveway! They are very aggressive in confronting and having trespassers arrested! It's sad, but I understand how they feel. They have some expensive horses there near the covered bridge from what I hear, so it's not a good idea to mess with them. If I win the lottery, I'm gonna offer 'em a deal on it though, and the property will be open again. Nothing left to see, though. All Charlie's buildings are gone from what I heard.
