Went to the School at the end of Memory lane at night, when I was a senior in High School with about 5 or 6 friends. We climbed in through a window, and then made our way through the school. The floor was falling apart, there was graffiti everywhere, a lot of occult stuff, and it was honestly one of the most creepiest places I've ever been. We all made it as far as the gym (there was a creepy open door in the gym that someone had painted TO HELL, with an arrow pointing down to the open door. I just remember thinking, "That's the darkest black that I had ever seen before." When all of a sudden we heard LOUD footsteps on the roof(?) We hightailed it out of there, and as soon as we had left I realized that I had sliced the hell out of the top of my wrist while exiting the window. We weren't supposed to be there, so I wouldn't let us go to the hospital. I still have the scar almost now, almost 20 years later. Up the hill from what are now the ruins of the old high school (on the Rural Hall side of the school) there used to be a very large, 3 storied, wood framed house called the Riddle House. My grandfather his wife and their entire extended family lived there in the late 30's and into the 40's....the stories I heard about that place as a kid....walking sounds, groaning under your bed, a headless figure, chains , the sound of breaking glass, foot prints in the snow that led nowhere...that place had the whole nine.
In the 60's, my uncle Frank who had lived there as a boy, was contracted by descendants of the Riddles to remodel the interior. They put about $50k into the job which was a lot of money back then. The job took 3 weeks to complete, and he was very glad that the work had gone without any spooky incidents at all. He hired a crew out of Winston that would not know any of the stories. Well, within a week of the family's moving in, they called Frank and arranged a new contract on the house: he was to tear it down, pull the foundations out of the ground, sow the ground with salt, and he was never to ask why in order to get the contract. He took the contract and told me years later that he didn't have to ask why, for he knew only too well, indeed, why. There's been a housing development up there for years now, and I've been thousands of miles away from there for decades now, but I have often wondered if folks living up there now have, over the years, had any strange inexplicable experiences up there. From the top of that hill down through the old high school and on down and through the village of Germanton and beyond there's a lot of stories that only a few old folks like me still know, but damn few ever talk about.
Wonder if this is the house the guy at Hanes Knitting told my dad abot some 40 years ago...

Loys pf people 8used to repprt that feeling. Unfortunately, you could NOT have seen lights on in the Edwards farmhoise. By 1997, the big house had been burned to ashes for mpore than 6 years, having been burned down in July, 1991... As far as the stories of some sort of massacre down there, don't believe it. Edward Payne is a made up myth. As I have stated previously, over and over, there was no one who slaughtered his family thyere. Milus Edwards blew himself up in 1955. This is documemted. He killed himself and ONLY himself. There have been other suicides, accidental killings, and murders out there over the years, but only 2 suicides were in the Edwards family, about 34 years apart... Now that it's paved, and so many hoises and the bridge are gone, it's nowhere near the spookfest it used to be...

The school is at the very end of Memory Lane. If you kept driving straight you would drive into it. I thought it was a house the first time I saw it. I went there last weekend and actually walked through it. It is very dangerous - holes in the floor - ceiling falling down. The outside is extrememly overgrown also. Right now, you can only see the very top of it when you drive up to it.

The alleged prostitute, One Vernice Alford, was NOT hanged. In November, 1992, she was taken out there, raped, beaten, tied to that big old tree, and stabbed repeatedly. 3 men were convicted in that killing. As for the grandfather, yes, he blew himself to kingdom come with a stick of dynamite. As for the other 3 deaths you mention, I have never seen anything about those. If you have documentation, I would like to see that. Do you have a link? Were you with Haunted NC? While I have great respect for their work, they do have the false story on their site that Lydia of Jamestown Underpass fame is one Lydia Jane McCarthy. Cursory research by myself, and by the High Point Library's NC Room show that Ms. McCarthy was in her 70's when she died in 1923.

No, I was not with Haunted NC. There was a blog by n Edwards descendant at one time that listed the 3 brothers. He also had a list of over 20 other violent deaths in the Edwards Family out there. I have the death certificate for the neighbor Sanders Spease, who shot himself in 1967. It's readiy available online. As should be te records of the Edwards Brothers. I posted te link somewhere. As for Lydia Jane McCarthy, Haunted NC got that frm an unreliable source. McCarthy was 76 when she died of heart failure. Death and newsaper records pove beyond any doubt that Annie Ludia Jackjson is te woman killed in the ONE fatal wrck there...

i have looked and looked for something on memory lane. but there is nothing! i've been there a couple times, and i'm pretty sure it was a school. but there is no record of an adress to that building at all. it's pretty weird. i have been trying to find something out for ever now! someone help! www.germanton.stokes.k12.nc.us/about-us--school-history.html says the school was built in 1923 as Germantown Union School but I can't find anything else online about it. Maybe I can swing by the library in Rural Hall one weekend. If anyone else does, please post.

I am very familiar with Payne Road and the history of the Payne Family, but I have not heard any of the history of the Daulton Family. Please, do tell... I find this interesting since, through extensive research, we have established that the EDWARDS FAMILY has owned that property where the so-called Payne House stood. It was the Edwards House. Period. Furthermore, only two violent deaths are documented out there, not some prolonged series. The deputy who last owned the house's grandfather, a suicide, and the young woman left tied to a tree in 1992. "Edward Payne's Diary" is decidedly NOT real, but was placed out there to scare people. It is someone's fright prop; nothing more. Furthermore, in taking it, your friend committed ROBBERY, as well as burglary in going into a house that, though no one lived in it, was hardly abandoned. People continue to use these false stories, and discredit any legitimate evidence. THERE WAS NO EDWARD PAYNE, at least, none associated with that house. Why do you have to treat me this way, Michael? You make me feel invalidated. My diary was a NY Times bestseller, but you describe it as "someone's fright prop" Also, I invited those boys in and gave them a free autographed copy of my diary. I hold nightly seminars with Q&A sessions at the bridge just down from my house on Payne Rd. If you bring a copy of my diary, I will sign it for you and take a photo. Donations are also welcome. Please help me raise awareness for the Mythical Paranormal Entity Society.

Edwards/Payne Road, Forsyth/Stokes Counties. Master Hunter is correct on- Frank Keith Hartgrove, is Keith's full name- you are correct with your info of the family and the old farm. Aubrey Edwards, Keith's grandfather and MF Edwrds's son, farmed that land until the '60's when family friction caused him to move and tend another farm leaving the house not lived in from the early 1960'w on. The old Edwards house was a grand house during the era it was built and many of the old 1800's antiques were destroyed by vandals seeking to find the ghosts as they did. Furniture wasn't the only thing destroyed, the grand house itself was also destroyed. Most of the wild tales came from incidents caused by people out to 'mess with other people' fueling all the rumors of the 'haunted house and farm.' As most old houses and buildings it did put off a creepy feeling, just feeling all the dead bodies that laid in state in the house as was the old practice. But no more than my great grandparents house when I was younger. I have been to the old house many times day and night for years as a guest and other than that eerie old house feeling i never saw it to be 'haunted.' The imagination is a powerful tool.
After a Hellsangel biker and his girfriend's bodies were dumped behind a barn and all the destruction, the family started going down to the farm and staying all night to try and control all the crime down there running off many that stopped, having some arrested, and creating a little mischief of their own. I attended many submarine races in my time down along the creek and hanging out at raven rock and never encountered anything abnormal except for other 'live' people's mischief.
Keith was, an innocent, person of interest in the late 80's in a drive by shooting of a woman in Forsyth County shot and killed in her living room through her window. He was never arrested just questioned, at a later date the real shooter and other occupants in the car were arrested.
Keith was an Army Ranger, an expert with a gun of any kind, who was a personal body to a Colonel during the Granada conflict. After leaving the Army at times he suffered from PTSD and trouble sleeping. As told by Keith to me, the night the girl he was dating was shot she wanted to learn 'take away' the process how to take a gun pointed at you away from a potential shooter. By the old well after practicing the procedure they stopped and drank. Not realizing he had automatically reloaded the gun after the game ended, she later wanted to do it again only this time alcohol, and an unexpected loaded gun, caused the deadly gunshot wound to her chest. Moments that haunted Keith the rest of his life were when she was still alive looking at him as he ferociously used his EMT training futilely trying to save her life. Losing his job thereafter he then would stay with a family friend in Concord during the week working in a mill. With his trial looming, guilt haunting him he chose to end his life on March 30, 1989 the day before his 26th birthday. A tragedy with alcohol and a firearm end two promising young people's lives. Thus adding more lure to the haunting of the old Edwards farm.

The judge did not allow the jury to hear the witness testimony including the deputy who chased Keith Hartgrove that night in Rural Hall. Did he shoot his girlfriend to keep her silent? If it were truly an accident, and he used his military training to attempt to save her, why did his guilt overcome him so much later? Why right before his court date.Just after an innocent man was convicted and sentenced to life for the murder Keith did. Ex Ranger and "gun expert"?? Yet: He FORGOT he reloaded? Umm. its called a safety. He couldn't face court? Just saying.
