In doing research for my new book, I have found several stories about this old school. Their official position is there are NO ghosts, but I have several anecdotes that say different. I have interviewed 3 alumni, who all gave me personal accounts of their experiences, which will be in the book. I am looking for documentation of a visitor who allegedly fell down an elevator shaft, 2 girls electrocuted in 1907, etc... In my research, I have found only 2 historically documented items which fit some of the stories. One was a pastor's little girl who died. The other was one 16 year old Academy boarder named Sarah "Salley" Tilkey, of Augusta, GA, who burned to death on Nov. 28, 1873. She was practicing piano when an ember from a stove caught her dress afire, and she went running through the building, believed to be the Sisters House, and down the steps, where a music teacher, Prof. Lineback, managed to put her out. The facts of this case fit several stories from several buildings, and I wonder if it might be a case of transferance. Anyone have any ideas?

I read that story in a book called, Winston & Salem: Tales of Murder, Mystery and Mayhem : By Jennifer Bean Bower. It was indeed sad and mysterious.

Yep, it's there. Also records at Salem and with the Moravian Archives. A teacher at the school told me about it, and I went and looked at this book, and she checked at the school for me. Do believe people have transferred some details to other buildings. 2 alumni told me about personal experiences in the Sisters House while it was under renovation, as well as personal experiences in Clewell, Babcock, etc... Most stories seem to be made up to scare freshmen, but these women are quite credible, and I believe them... Trying to find some documentation to back them up now...

Oh yeah, before I forget, there is actually a PHOTO of this tragic young lady in that Jennifer Bean Bower book, if you all want to put a face with the story! I think Lilghost actually has this book, if I remember correctly, Becky!

i actually went to salem academy and had several eerie experiences. all the girls on one hall got locked in their rooms one day (there were no keys either, as we weren't allowed to lock our doors anyway), stereos would turn on and off randomly and switch songs on the cds, closet doors would slam all the time when nobody was near them. we even made an improv mockumentary movie about the hauntings of the building. there's some pretty creepy stuff in the basement under the kitchen.
