Hello, everyone! There is now an official club at App. State, dedicated to paranormal study. APSO. I was invited to come to campus yesterday, to join the group, and tell them the campus legends. Amy and David went with me.
We arrived a little after 7PM, and met the club, or, around twenty of them! Got a very special treat... They got permission for us to actually go into East residence Hall for an investigation! This was my home at ASU for several years. Had actually thought I'd never get to go inside again. Was thrilled to do so, and boy, the years just rolled away! To some East is just a building... the supposed most haunted on campus. But for me, it's that and so much more... The hallowed halls of my youth; happy times and not so happy. But I adore the old place!
We started out in the basement, scene of the most famous stories, then proceeded throughout the building. I related all the tales I knew, and they shared some from since. Did EVP sessions in several laces, and will be analyzing over the next week. Everyone took several pics. APSO members are supposed to share what they find with CCSS!
Any East vets on here? If so, speak up! Share! I was told this was to be her final year, but she MAY have received a reprieve from the wrecking ball. Told now that they found it would cost far more to rip her down and build something new, than it would just to renovate. HOPE that is true, and she will go on. If that old dorm dies, part of me will too.
Anyway, ghost stories from all 5 floors, and all 11 wings (She forms a "C" with 5 floors on one end, 3 floors on the other 2 wings), including the alleges ghosts of at least 4 women, 7 men, and 2 alleged dark entities. Anyone with an east Hall story, please respond!

Hi. Former student of ASU and East Hall resident back from 2003 to 2004. I lived on the first floor in one of the rooms over the basement but I can't remember the number, possibly 5, i'm not sure. As Halloween approached I had seen in the paper a small article on ghost sightings in East Hall. I'm interested in such things, so I got up the nerve to go down into the basement after midnight on halloween. It was very dark down there, and I was wearing flip-flops, however, the steps I heard in addition to my own were unmistakably bootsteps. I got freaked out and went back upstairs. Not very convincing, huh.
For some reason or another I never went back into the basement my entire year there. I regret that... However, a ghost seemed it appropriate to come to me. The last day of my second semester I was packing up my belongings. My roommate was out and the door was closed. I was standing in the middle of the room. Suddenly a pencil bounced off my shoulder at sufficient speed to fly across the room and hit the dresser stack between the desks. Creepy. I was definitely alone and there was nothing taller than me in the room.
Well, it seems they weren't satisfied with that, as later my roommate returned and then went to get a drink from the vending machines, which were about 4 or 5 rooms down the hall, around a corner, on the other side of a small office, around another corner, and on the other side of a kitchen. Now, he is not a very big guy, in fact he was downright scrawny and not very strong. He left the door open when he left. A minute later I heard a loud rapid banging, boom booboomboom, boom boomboom. Very loud it was, and a few seconds later my roommate comes running through the door, breathless and wide eyed. "Dude! The drink machine just started jumping on it's own!" I have no doubt it wasn't him, I had only heard it, but the machine had gotten some impressive air-time with the time between the bangs.
Say what you will, but I have been forever convinced that East Hall is indeed haunted.

Maybe not for much longer. I understand she may be on the chopping block at the end of tis year... OR she may just be renovated... We'll see. The APSO Team investigated IG Greer Hall last night... Been chatting with some members on FB. Sounds like they had an interesting night.

A student at App State was doing some research I asked him to do, when he made one of those rare EUREKA! discoveries! Brendon Richards, a member of APSO, found a news article from 1977 about the suicide in East! Not only that, he found the young man's death certificate! We have always postulated that the story of the hanging suicide in the basement had become entwined with the story of this sad young man, and the facts seem to prove this. The most common tale about the suicide was that he hanged himself in his room on Subfloor, which is the floor above the basement, where the older hanging story comes from. As is often the case, the true circumstances vary just a bit from the legend, but there is absolutely no doubt this is the guy from the stories about subfloor. The young man did NOT hang himself, but rather, shot himself with a .22 caliber pistol, in his dorm room in East Hall. This terrible incident occurred on September 29, 1977. His roommate found the 17 yr old Freshman in their room that evening around 6PM. This is a matter of public record. The young man's death certificate indicates where and how he died. And the poor young fellow's name was Lacy Everitt ( Perhaps Everett, but spelled with the "i" in the certificate). We have no idae as yet why this poor kid decided to end his life, but we now have the facts to back up the stories. The ghost is said to be most active around the end of September, and early October. It is good to now have the facts upon which the legend is based. great job, Brendon!

I am a vet of East Hall, freshman year of 2010-2011. Though I lived on the third floor and did not have any experiences, my roommate did. She was sitting in the hall, facing the bathroom doors, and she heard footsteps coming down the hall behind her. She was near the middle of the hallway and got up to move out of whoever's way she was in. She never heard a door close like someone went into another room, but she could've sworn that she felt a slight breeze go past her and the footsteps stopped immediately after. I was in the room asleep, but this story she told me definitely freaked me out... I don't know whether it is true or not, but with East's Haunted History, I feel certain that she didn't just "make it up". She was also a good friend of mine upon rooming with me at App State. East is still standing as of 2012, but I don't know for how much longer. I loved East's coziness when I was there, but I definitely didn't linger out in the bathrooms or in the halls by myself past midnight!

This puts you squarely on Third New. That is the hall where David Crutchfield and I had a startling experience in the Summer of 1991. When I was a freshman in 1987, the RA up there experienced something similar several times. We will be at App. again this year, speaking with Prof. Al Proffit's Freshman Seminar classes sometime in the Fall... My direct email is tsarmike818@yahoo.com

I too am a vet of East Hall 2006-2007 and 2007-2008. I firmly believe it is haunted. I was up late one night on the third floor during spring break and someone (thing) brushed against me as I walked down the hall but I was the only person in the hallway. It was the strangest and creepiest feeling. Also in my time living on the first floor sometimes I would notice small things not where I left them. This could easily be a mischievous roommate but she swears it wasn't her. Either way I loved all my time in that hall and at the school.

I lived in East hall my sophmore year 2003-2004 on the subfloor, and the night before my last final of the year (may of 04) I had an experience that freaked me out. My roomate had already gone home and as per usual my last final was the last day at the last time, so I was in the room alone for the last three days of the semester. In the middle of my last night there, I woke up to a weird hissing noise and the water running full blast on HOT in the sink, so much so that the mirror above it fogged up. Also the door to my room was wide open and light from the hallway was pouring in. I know I did not go to sleep with my door open ( it was usually shut and locked) and my sink on... so I got out of bed and kinda yelled at "whatever" to stop messing me with because I had a final the next day. Didn't really sleep much after that and had to turn on the TV so I didn't freak out more . Did Ace my final though, so maybe it was good luck. No idea!

Which floor and hall was this? Room #? Would be interesting if it's one of the rooms where this was a regular occurrence when I was there...

Well, I finally spoke with an eyewitness who was present in East Residence Hall on September 29, 1977. The witness confirms that the suicide occurred in Room 125. This is a corner room on New Wing. The "25's" are the only rooms in East with windows facing BOTH Lovill Residence Hall, and US 322. This makes it seem even stranger that no one heard the shots. Apparently, it was just a normal early semester day.
The victim was Mr. Lacey Dean Everitt. He was a 17 year old freshman from Greensboro. He was alone in the room when he shot himself. His roommate found him,and ran for help. My witness, Mr. Hawkins, was standing with the RA and others when the student came running up and whispered frantically in the RA's ear. Hawkins heard only"and He's got a gun!" before everyone took off. The witness didn't go himself, but a couple of his friends did.
This shows beyomd doubt where the historical suicide happened. It wasn't on Subfloor as previously believed.
M Hawkins also told of a Ginny Moss. She lived in East, but died elsewhere because of drugs cut with strichnine poison. The boy who supplied her with the drugs is said to have killed himself off camps, by hanging. THIS could be the origin of the hanging story.
Hawkims also recalled a student they all called Doc. Doc had 3... THREE!!!... roommates die on him. People began calling him "Doctor Death" and no one would room wit him after the 3rd death. He will be giving me more contacts, and names soon. Apparently, Everitt's death was the beginning ofa spate of East related fatalities...

I also lived on Subfloor in 2003-2004. It was a co-ed floor at the time, and I think our room (012?) was to the right of the men's room. If I remember correctly, it was the 1st year in a while that the Subfloor wasn't reserved for the International Students.
Even though you had to go down a flight of stairs to get to the subfloor (as East Hall did not have elevators) it was still one floor above the basement, and most (if not all?) rooms had a view of the outside. The basement had been used for a few different things over the years- classrooms and offices, most recently- but this was the 1st year that it was basically left abandoned, used only for storage. Students weren't supposed to go down there without permission, but I don't think it was really enforced except after dark when the dorm was reserved for residents and guests who had signed themselves in. Maybe they used to lock the doors at the bottom of the stairs sometimes, but I got special permission to go down there at least 3 different times, twice at night, so now I can't remember.
It may have even been Halloween, or close to it. A few of the residents petitioned and/or got special permission for the basement area to be open all night for anyone who wanted to take part in a "ghost hunt." It wasn't a serious ghost hunt, for sure, mostly just joking around, telling stories, and taking dares. I brought a video camera and left it sitting on the table in one of the classrooms. I don't know which one, but it was near the base of the stairs and the women's room was down the hall to the left. This weird girl from the 3rd(?) floor kept telling me she could talk to ghosts, but I'd known her for over a year and knew she was just weird. She insisted that a girl had once hung herself in the bathroom down there, but there were lots of variations of what may be the same ghost story. Needless to say, no ghosts were documented that night, at least to my knowledge. HOWEVER, we did notice the age of the heating system and possibly also the plumbing (which, if I remember correctly, ran along the ceiling of the basement, secured with brackets but totally visible overhead.) East Hall is an old building, and most (if not all) of the rooms were still heated with radiators. Though I don't know if it was the radiators of the plumbing, all we really determined that night was that it makes LOTS of Spooky Noises which can sound like footsteps or loud banging if you're already kinda spooked, or if you're not used to it. So not to discount anybody's experiences, but I can definitely say that the fixtures did a whole lot of clangin'. I think it was the only dorm left with radiator heat, so we weren't necessarily used to such outdated fixtures, which could explain a lot. I still have the video we made in the basement that night, but it's on VHS and there's exponentially more Monty Python references than there are ghostly phenomenons.
We did have one strange experience in our room, quite possibly even in late September or October, but I can't remember now. People had jokingly said that "our room must be the haunted one," because it was always 10-20* cooler than the other rooms when we moved in that August. There was a power outage for 3 days during the 1st week of school that year, so a lot of us camped out in the hallway and got to know each other- That's how I know our room was so much cooler, but that wasn't necessarily a ghost. Anyways, one day myself, my roommate, the 2 guys who lived next door, and at least one other person were crowded into our room trying to see if one of the guys could beat Super Mario Bros in <8min, and all of a sudden, the doorknob went down and the door flew open. We thought it was somebody playing a joke on "the haunted room," but nobody was out there. Thinking they could have run off, and ready to discount it as a prank, one of us went to close the door. Only, the handle was stuck in place, meaning the door had been locked the whole time. (Otherwise it could have been a change in air pressure from our window being open.) Both myself and my roommate, the only 2 people with keys, had been inside the room the whole time. The door had been closed and locked for sure, and somebody or something had pushed the handle down before opening it. We never did explain that one, even though we were able to debunk a few people's experiences by listening more closely to the radiators.
Also, does anybody remember when there was an old wooden barn in between East Hall and Hardin St? I always wondered why it was there, if it pre-dated the Campus, and why it was still hanging on. I think it was torn down around 2007-08?

The 17 year old boy from Greensboro, Lacey Everitt, shot himself in what is now Room 125... a corner room across from a small bathroom, on the Lovill side of New Wing, on September 29, 1977. The hanging story in the basement is a myth, likely brought on by people mixing up Everitt's story with that of Jenny Moss. She was an East student who died ff campus from lethal drugs. The boy who gave her the drugs later hanged himself, also off campus.
If you go to Facebook and find Camel City Spirit Seekers, you can like, thn look at photos, Notes, etc... There s a photo of me in front of East that points out the suicide room. In the Notes, there s also a copy of Cami Maher's paper on East. Included in this is a diagram of East thst indicates every room she found that had a story. It's pretty complete, missing on;y a couple.
It is possible that what you heard actually WAS footsteps... of someone messing around in te old tunnels. Students aren't suposed to be in there, but they still go, even todsy. There is a access point in East basement, ad other places o campus. Sorry for any typos here. I am suffering from a nerve disease that affects my hads and legs, soo have trouble typing a lot.
Incidentally, a student killed herself in White Hall last year. Keegan Garrett r something like that. Rumors say she hanged herself in a bathroom, but that is unsubstantiated. The school hshed it up
