My husband remembers a house that used to be on Payne Road before it burned down. He said it made the area even spookier. But, it was actually the bridge right by the house that people went out there for. He also agrees with you. Now that they have paved the road and the house is gone, it's much less creepy. I wish I could have seen it back in the day.

Thanks for the link. I've read this before, and it sounds pretty cool. I have issues with hauntednc for one reason. Despite all the proof that Lydia Jane McCarthy is NOT the Jamestown Underpass ghost (She was born in 1847 and thus 76 at death, not 19.), they keep that update about her posted. Everything else seems cool, though.

Hello, I was surfing the web and came across your website and starting reading about the different stories of Payne RD. I have lived in Rural Hall all my life and have heard alot of stories about the place. I live not even 5 mins away from the road. It was a few months ago that I talked a friend into going with me to check the place out. I remember going down there years ago when I was little, it was a dirt road and I was pretty scared so I didn't want to stay down there long. As my friend and I were driving down the road I was surprised to see that everything had changed. The road was paved and it didn't look as scary as I once remembered it. But as night fell the creepy feeling started to come back. There are a few houses down there that are deserted and have an erie feel to them as well as the graveyard. I don't think the bridge is down there anymore. I think they took it out once they paved the road. Nothing really happened that seemed paranormal, I think it was mainly the thought of something happening because of all the stories I have heard throughout the years. Though it was very interesting and quite a thrill. I have always been interested in the paranormal. I often study about the paranormal and would like to explore some of these places around NC.

Why do you think that the Lawson's had a shack and farmed on Payne Road? They had 200 acres on Brook Cove Road - it makes no sense that they would also have property on Payne Road. And you are the only person in history to ever say this. Others get confused and think the Lawson's lived on Payne Road, but I've never heard anyone say the Lawson's lived on Brook Cove and also had property on Payne Road. Just curious where you are getting this info.

I will say again, it is POSSIBLE the Lawsons either actually farmed a lot on Payne, or perhaps HELPED someone. There is simply no proof either way. I do know for a fact that farmers back then would often lease or rent property not connected to their own, miles away, and farm it to increase profits. People also would go and help neighbors or acquaintances miles away. My own family has done this. It still happens today, though not as much. Until we can find evidence to support or disprove, we simply must not dismiss this possibility out of hand. However, this connection, if it did exist, would be only of historical significance, not paranormal. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about the Payne Road legends has anything to do with Charlie Lawson or his family. This falsehood is something I have been battling for years. It's like some horror movie monster that just won't die, no matter how many times I or anyone else puts a stake through its heart. There are things that happen out there... just not Lawson-related.

I don't know if you guys are sharing stories about Payne Road but I came across your website and decided to leave my story I'd like to share back when my friends and I went to Payne Road in 2003... I was together with 10 of my best friends--between the ages 20-27 including me. I was a ghost skeptic 100% before my experience here. One crazy night, being a Saturday we were all bored and decided annonomously we would go to Payne Road and explore it's 'paranormal-ness.' It was only a 45 minute drive from where we lived at the time so we each got in seperate cars and drove there. We parked at the end of the road. Immediately after we had gotten out, we saw vehicle lights coming up behind us--we couldn't tell if it was a car or truck at first--then the closer it got to us, we saw it was an old Ford truck with wood in the long bed. They didn't stop, but they slowed down to almost 15 mph to get a look at us--I suppose before speeding off. Some of my friends were smoking pot at the time and just laughed it off...I was a little creeped out myself. Still, we continued up the road. The whole time, I tried to stay in the middle of the group--not wanting to have my back exposed to the night. Everyone was talking and occasionally getting loud...I really kinda wanted to stay quiet and try to listen for sounds. My friend Jareth and I at the same time heard something in the woods--but ignored it at first because we thought it could very well have been an animal. Then we heard a soft moan that sounded human...like the person was struggling to get passed the bushes. I yelled a curse word and everyone turned around like they didn't hear anything and wondered what was going on. Jareth heard it too and we told them what we heard. Some of my friends believed us and laughed screaming and others mainly the guys--shrugged it off. After about ten minutes had passed, I felt that feeling you get when someone is watching you two inches away from your face but you can't see what/who it is. I grabbed my friend Jessica's hand and we started talking about something off topic. When we reached the cemetary, they all started moving up towards it--leaning up against the tree and exploring whose graves were who, and whatnot. I didn't want to leave the road. Suddenly I realized I was the only one on the road alone. My friend Jen was on the grass beside me. A car raced around a blind curve without their lights on--which scared me to death. Jen grabbed me and pulled me into the grass with her screaming obsenities back at the car. My other friends screamed "oh my god what was that?" and "who the @#$! would leave their lights off?" I remember feeling extremely cold right then, and decided it best not to move. Nothing else happened for awhile, as we talked and then headed back down the road back to our cars. Two more incidents happened that night that I couldn't explain but chose not to tell anyone. I turned around and looked behind me at the road and saw a dark shadow that looked like smog float across the road like a person would if he was squatting and walking at the same time. My heart jumped in my throat. Then when we got back to our cars, my car started up fine and all, but as we started driving up the road, it seemed like my emergency brake was on because I couldn't pick up speed and my steering wheel was dramatically off alignment. It stopped after a few seconds and I was fine. Needless to say, I was pretty freaked. Whether or not it was just my imagination is a mystery and I haven't been back since! Hope you liked my story and took into consideration that I'm not crazy.

Not trying to diss but I think smoking pot could make things seem alittle more than what they are. If you're under the influence of something it might make it kind of hard to really grab onto what is really going on at the moment. And especially alot of people on here I would think take trying to study the paranormal serious. If we go anywhere to investigate a location we treat it with respect and really want to know what is going on. I can see just going out and doing something if your bored but take into consideration that people do live on that road and don't think they would be to thrilled to have people running around acting crazy and screaming and being disrespectful. So, reading this story I can't really say that anything paranormal happened. Just an experience to tell. That's just my opinion.

This person does NOT know what they are talking about. The lawson Farm was off Brook Cove Road, and the driveway is right at Watts Road. Whoever told this person that the Lawsons EVER lived on Payne Road told wrong. The Lawsons are buried off Brook Cove too, in Browder Cemetery. The house in question on Edwards/Payne belonged to the EDWARDS Family!!!! No LAWSONS!!! I'm afraid this is the misplaced story that will not die. no matter how many times I put the stake through its heart, somebody reattaches the Lawsons to Payne Road. Not! Not! Not! They were NEVER there. Period. No matter how many times someone says they lived and died there, it doesn't change the truth. I am sorry to be so blunt, but I am tired of trying to put this misconception to rest. The Lawson farm was and is right across a big field from the old Watts House, now known as Squire's Inn. AT THE CORNER OF WATTS AND BROOK COVE!!!! NOT PAYNE ROAD!!!! You should actually know what you are talking about before you speak. Edwards Rd./Payne Rd. starts in Rural Hall and ends in Germanton. Edwards Rd. turns INTO Payne Rd. right up from where the house used to be where the hairpin turns start. I have lived here all my life and grew up with this. The house on Payne Rd. IS where the Lawson family lived and were murdered in December of 1929.

Believe me, I was trying to talk to a lady about Payne rd and she got into that the lawsons lived there. I tried to explain to her where they were actually located and she said something about how after Charlie killed his family that he washed his bloody hands in the river on Payne rd. Though I have never heard of a river near payne rd. Not sure but how in the world could he have done that if he was found behind a shed not long after the other murders? I really get tired of this as well.

Charlie DID wash his hands in Town Fork (D?) Creek, supposedly. This stream DOES run through both the Lawson and Edwards properties. This is the one and ONLY connection between the two places, and it's tenuous. That MAY explain some of the misunderstandings, but it still doen's make the Lawson crimes any neareer to Payne Road. Thanks for reminding me of the creek.

Yea it does me to after finding out what everyone else thinks about this road. I have always heard of the story of the family murders and when you stop your car on the bridge and turn it off if wont start back up. I have talked to people that says that it actually worked. I will never know though because its not there anymore. Let me know if you find out anything else and I will be trying to find out more things as well. What makes me wonder is that if nothing actually happened down that road where in the world are all these stories coming from? I guess the best thing is to keep searching. Maybe the lirbary in rural hall might have something and if it comes down to it, actually going down the road and talking to some of the people. Hopefully they might. From everything that I have heard, seems like everyone has something different to say about this road.
