Does anyone have any information on dalton road? I have been up there and around the field, but when my friends went to show me the house had been burned down. I would very much love to know about the history of this place and the house. My friend told me that inside there were elaborate demon drawings of faces, pentagrams, circles, and seemingly it sounds like places to evoke/chant/sayance/worship/ and or maps and explinations of something evil. If anyone has ANY pictures or ANYTHING i would love to know Please contact or reply!

Hi all, I too am interested in Daulton Road. I had never heard any stories related to Daulton Rd., until I joined this forum. What exactly took place on this road and when? Hopefully someone with some knowledge of this road can answer my question. And is it related to Payne/Edwards Road in some way? Whenever I see Payne Road mentioned here I also see Daulton Road attached with it. Just Curious.....Thanx!!

I'm not too sure about the history of the house, other than it was a stagecoach stop for many years. The house was used as a hotel, at one time, that section was actually listed on maps as "Dalton, NC". Here are a few pics (scans, sorry) of the house and the tunnels beneath it. As a kid, I used to hear that the tunnels were used by the underground railroad, as a place to torture and kill slaves, etc....later on, my dad told me they were simply used as a cut through from the detached kitchen to the main house. (The truth is always so much more mundane!!) Both pics are scans from the "Stokes County" pictorial book by Chad Tucker. The tunnels and interior shot.... Beautiful old place, it's a crime they burned it down....

Thanks for the great pictures! It's a shame they burned the house down. I wonder if the tunnel still exists. I guess I may have to do a "drive by" sometime. It's only about 2 miles or so frommy house.

close to me too. I drive past the area taking the kids to school. They are tearing down the bridge on Dalton Road that approaches old 52. I assume this house was on the side south east of the bridge as that side is closer to the railroad trax.

Thanks for the awesome pics Julia! I wonder too, if the tunnels still exist? It is definitely a shame that they burned down such a historical house!!!

I think there is another home built in the vicinity of the old house. Driving down Dalton toward Old Hwy 52, the old house would have been on the left (I think....) you can still see somewhat where the old drive was. I'd have to get my dad to pin point the exact location. It's very doubtful that the tunnels are still intact, although they WERE still there in the late 70's, early 80's. We did a school field trip there and I remember going into the tunnels.
It just occured to my how unstable those things could have been with a group of 4th(?) graders roaming around!!!!!
Thanks! I have enough books around here to start a library (or tinderbox as my husband says...) Somewhere in them are pics of about everything in the area just have to dig at times...and dig, and dig.....

I remember you asking about the Dalton house but I myself don't know anything about it. I'm going to have to get that Stokes County book though. It looks interesting!

I am going to the King Library this week in search of info. Recently, someone told me stuff about this place I intend to verify before announcing. However, if the stories pan out, this will provide another true story that contributed elememnts to the false Edward Payne story...

Don't know HOW exactly, but seems a lot of people are confusing both the Dalton Hoiuse in King, with both the Dalton-Hunt House in Courtney-Huntsville, and the Dalton Hospital in GA...

Heading down Dalton Rd towards Old Hwy 52, the Dalton House would be up on the hill to your right. A big tree or two still stands and there is still part of a well house. The land is now a pasture, waiting to sell. Google "Dalton Farms, King, NC". 700 acres or so for about 5mil. A little further down the road on your left is another plantation style home, set back off of the road. IIRC it was owned by a Dalton family member as well. (All affiliated with the Hairston plantations) If you park at the tracks and walk them to the left, there's a pretty cool railroad trestle about 150 yards down. (Think 'Stand by Me') After crossing the tracks, before crossing the bridge there used to be an area to pull off of to walk to the river. At the river are large rock formations well worn by the Saura Indians and the many baptisms that have been performed there. (Slaves and locals) Someone has bought and built on the river turn off. (Built on sacred ground, BTW.) As far as sight seeing goes, or looking for a thrill, you will probably be disappointed. Really nothing to see and Stokes county locals do not take kindly to trespassers. Hope all that helped!
