Well, I am so glad you googled....lol Welcome to the forum! I know you will love it! When you get moved in let us know, maybe we can ride down for an investigation. Happy Haunting! Thanks! I'm trying to return to NC, I've been in FL way too long! I go up to NC 2-3 times a year, once is always over the 4th of July for the Heavy Rebel Weekender. Whenever I visit I always try to visit A) a Rev War or Civil War site, and B) a paranormal site. This year when I was in Mocksville, my brother and I were driving down by the hospital and I mentioned to him the old story that if you stopped at the stop sign around midnight, you would hear the clop-clop of a horse, but no horse would be seen. My brother turned white as a sheet, and then a few minutes later he told me that back when he worked on second shifta bout ten years ago, he would drive home that way, and that actually happened to him! He said he just thought he was imagining things.

I'm in Forsyth County, been ghost hunting since I was a kid. My friend mentioned a ghost hunters of NC site, I googled, and alas, here I am.
At Salem College, and I'm sure this site is no stranger to stories about this place. Only been here a few months and I've already heard/taken photos/and seen things. I've got to admit one of the things that drew me here was some of the lore about it.
Anyway, glad to be here in a community of kindred spirits who are local. If anyone knows anything interesting or anything in general about the spirits of Salem or Old Salem, feel free to message me!

Okay..As a new member and after much observation, I have found the Forum to be very interesting as well as informative in a couple of categories. I am a researcher dedicated to information and events surrounding the Charlie Lawson Murders of 1929 and presently I have a strong interest in events and stories regarding Payne Road and any information that can be obtained from the Green Park Inn meeting in Blowing Rock, NC. My research, sometimes goes well below the surface and both the Green Park Inn and Payne Rd have distinct connections to the Charlie Lawson Murders...I will look forward to further discussions of both locations and in hopes that many questions can be resolved....... Regards...Samskoe

I have repeatedly driven a stake through the heart of the Charlie Lawson Story and Payne rd. having any connection. I would be curious to hear what you have there, but after years of research by myself and the folks who made the documentary, I don't think any validatable connection exists.

Hello Michael, Welcome to my think tank. sounds like you have given up pursuit of the real World of Charlie Lawson. Nevertheless...where the Charlie Lawson event is concerned, neither the Documentary or the Books published, have produced anything conclusive or of validatable content. I have reached many Dead Ends with my research..but I never doubted there would be another connecting point somewhere, and sometimes you just have to follow an elusive story, no matter where it leads you... Thanks for your commentary on my post...hopefully we will be able to share a few tales from the Green Park Inn... Regards, Samskoe

No, I mean, I have EXHAUSTIVELY researched Charlie Lawson, and THERE IS NO CONNECTION TO PAYNE ROAD. PERIOD. The Lawson Farm, where the Christmas Day murders took place, is off Brook Cove Road. This is irrefutable, and DOCUMENTED. They did NOT ever live on Payne Road. The stories concerning an "Edward Payne" on Payne Road are also complete fiction. The house up there was the EDWARDS house, and was for generations. Not one piece of the TRUE Lawson story took place on Payne Rd. The cemetery where they are buried is ALSO NOT on Payne Rd., as some people say. I HAVE BEEN THERE. They are buried in Browder Cemetery, just off Hwy8 and Brook Cove Rd., up a drive into the trees marked PRIVATE DRIVE. There is a book called THE BEAST OF RICKARDS ROAD AND THE GHOST OF PAYNE ROAD which continues this fiction of Charlie's deeds being connected up there, even having the Lawson Farm being where the EDWARDS farm was on Payne. Frankly, I don't see why people refuse to accept irrefutable facts. Not only have I been to the grave, I have been to the property several years ago where the murders occurred, when the house was still there. Payne Road is a completely separate set of stories, and most of them are made up rubbish to keep people away from the Edwards house while it stood, and out of the Klan's hair. There is something to some stories, but there was no family massacre, and no slave massacre or rebellion on Payne/Edwards Road. Again, I ask you... What connection does the Green Park Inn have to the Lawson story? The things I remember have no connection to the Lawsons either. Wait. I will give you the one and ONLY connection between the Edwards property nad the Lawson property. And this is a tenuous connection at best, and really does NOT connect the legends at all. The same creek flows through both farms. That is it. The documentary DOES give irrefutable varifiable facts: The location of the Lawson Farm. The location of the grave. The LACK OF CONNECTION BETWEEN PAYNE RD. AND THE LAWSON PROPERTY, among others. Their research has also proven CONCLUSIVELY that John Dillinger, the infamous gangster, was NEVER at the Lawson Farm. The John Dillinger who left the infamous note on the door was an officer in the newborn NC Highway Patrol. There is really no reason to pursue the Charlie Lawson story. We know who committed the crime (ALL evidence found has perpetually pointed the finger at Charlie). We have pretty good circumstantial evidence of his motives (If the Lawsons can provide proof otherwise, they should have by now). The house is gone, and the current residents of the property have NO care for the story, or its surrounding ghostly legends, so the place is unavailable for study or investigation. Unless something concrete were to develop, I would say the Lawson Story, as far as a ghostly connection, is a dead cell. Again. Zero Lawson Connection to Payne Rd. What is the connection to the Inn in Blowing Rock?

Hey Michael, Thanks for all the detail you have shared with me. You sound like a very intense and dedicated, research entrepreneur.....However...you haven't told me anything that hasn't been discussed in the Books or the Documentary. My research , over the past twenty years has been quite extensive..and has gone far beyond knocking on todays doors for opinions and basing my thoughts and writings on old photographs or Antiquities...I visited the Lawson Home on many occasions before it was torn down..and I have spent numerous hours in the Browder Cemetery to collectively and mentally piece some of the puzzle pieces together that have seemingly eluded everyone with a wish or need to know the answers. There is definitely a connection to Payne Road and the Lawson Family, although it is not related to Town Fork Creek nor does it have any Ghostly applications that cannot be corroborated or cast aside..The William D. Browder Family lived on Payne Road before He purchased the Chaffin Plantation on NC Highway #8..and as you must know by now...W.D. Browder was the Original Owner and developer of the Browder Cemetery....The Lawsons and Browders were connected before Charlie decided to move to Germanton from Lawsonville..and as a matter of fact and records...the connection in some ways, goes a bit further than Lawsonville and Payne Road... I am not an expert and I cannot suggest that I have arrived at any definite conclusions..but, I am not reluctant to follow information that is different from my own..and hopefully..some day..there will be a satisfactory answer to the Lawson Mystique...... Have a good day.......later...Samskoe...

As I said in my PM, I think, there was talk of Charlie having helped out a farmer on Payne Road. But no one had documentation to back up that claim. If you have documentation of that, I would like to see it. And the Green Park Inn's connection?

Well...you were very close to the facts when you received the information of Charlie working for someone on Payne Road...why did you not pursue it further ?..Some of Charlie's best moments were never discovered, and simply because researchers did not dig deep enough... I have given you two new leads to the life and times of Charles Davis Lawson...but somehow you have an unending desire to look a gift horse in the mouth...I have a wish to share information with any interested party...but...in the event you need documentation and/or proof of the leads I have shared with you...you will need to set your search vehicle in motion again, and if you need assistance through the obstacle course...just rattle my chain....... Enough. If you are so willing to share what you know, SHARE IT. Poop or get off the pot, as they say. I did not pursue it further because, as I said, I felt it unimportant in finding any connection between the ghostly legends (What this forum is all about). By the time of the killings, Charlie had a big farm of his own to tend to. As I said, with the new family owning the property not wishing to be involved in any way with the Lawson Story, I feel it is a dead cell. We know who the killer was (Despite protestations of some). Nothing good can be accomplished by dredging up these things, except to satisfy the curiosity of many who aren't even related to them. Unless you are willing to share what you say you know, I am done sparring with you. I. Do. Not. Like. Games.
