I can put the story about the Edwards house on Payne road to rest. Frank Edwards was my Grandmother brother. He pulled his truck into a shed close to the house and put a stick of dynamite under his head and and struck a match to it. My mom said he was a very kind man and the whole family was in shock that he would do something like that. The house is not there anymore. It burned down. Hi! Glad to see an Edwards relative finally on here refuting that stuff. Best of luck to you. You'll find it a bit harder to put this to rest though. I have been driving a stake through the heart of this particular set of stories for years now. Like Christopher Lee's Dracula, it just keeps coming back! lol...

The grandfather Edwards committed suicide out there as did a grandson...though I cannot recall his name, and this was related to me by an Edwards family member. I have also heard a tale about a biker and a female being shot execution-style and left under the eaves of a building out there. I have done substantial deed work on this property and it is in fact still in the hands of Edwards descendants. :-) I have also heard a tale of a child drowning in the well on the Edwards property, though I cannot prove it. It is a very interesting story. I do think the eerie feelings could have something to do with the lay of the land or something geological.

Glad to see that someone else is researching the factual stories concerning the Edwards property. I've been trying to drive a stake thru that Edward Payne BS for years! I had heard the biker and woman story before, but found nothing to substantiate it, so didn't dwell. Heard about the grandson too. Not sure, but think he may have shared a name with his grandfather. The child in the well is a new one on me, but is possible. Thanks for doing fact-based research...

I know this thread seems long dead but I just found it. I grew up in Rural-Hall. I lived on Hwy 65 till I was in the 1st grade, then on Paso St and then moved away (Goldsboro) for 2 years. My parents split and Mom moved us to Stanleyville for nearly 5 years then we lived on Cook St for 3 years before moving out of state. All this was to show I grew up there. I was a Senior at North in 1981-1982. I drove a school bus as did many of my friends. For Halloween 1981, 3 car loads of my friends(me included) went riding down Payne Road. It was the thing we did when we wanted to freak each other out. Well we got what we were looking for. We all grew up knowing the "legends" and rumors about the Payne House. I only ever saw it boarded up. The lawn was ALWAYS kept cut and green. The fields along the road past the bridge and house were always plowed and tended. The road was not paved, quite washed out, curvy in places and steep in others. It always kicked up dust. My friends were driving and we rode past the house and of course told all the stories we knew of. It was always creepy and had a HEAVY feel in the area. We rode to the intersection and turned around to come back past the house. Before we got to the curve, The car I was in got a flat tire. We were very near the edge of the road so we just stopped and got out to look. Mind you, this area had no light whatsoever except for maybe the moon and stars. It was the front passenger side tire. My friend did not have a jack for this car and the other cars didn't have one that would work. One car left to go get a wrecker and the other stayed with us. There were like 8 people standing arounf, in the dark, looking at the tire. Quite a sight. We heard noises from the house area and straight ahead of us past the curve. We assumed there were animals lurking but this was Halloween. We started talking about the stories. High School kids, in the dark, telling all kinds of folklore and "ghost" stories. All of us afraid to admit that we were just a bit nervous to be there. It took nearly 2 hours for the wrecker to get to us. He changed the tire and left. The car that went after the wrecker did not return because they had to get home by a certain time. So here we are climbing back into the remaining two cars. Glad to be leaving. Before we can start the car I am in, we heard what sounded like acorns or pebbles hitting the car. Nothing insane just a few tings. We knew we were not under a tree nor really near any. There were rocks on the road (we think one took out the tire) but there were no other people out of the cars. Knowing the stories, we started the car, turned on the lights and headed towards the curve and house to leave. As we rounded the curve, the headlights shined off the road towards an old barn on the opposite side of the road from the house and back a bit off the road. There were maybe 15 people, all dressed in clothing from pioneer days, all of them dirty. We did not stop. We did not slow down. We continued to have pinging noises but louder and more frequent. We got all the way to the cemetary at the fork and hit paved road before the noises stopped. We got all the way to my house on Cook St before we really relaxed. The car that was behind our car told us that they did not see the people in the barn area but they were followed by a car with its bright lights on and that it came out of the barn area. They assumed we were just trying to keep away from the car. We in our car never saw the car following them. We did not see their lights either. The next morning we were looking at the car to see if there were any marks from the "rocks" hitting the car and there were none but there were DOZENS of little hand prints in the dust on the windows. I have not been back to Payne road since. I am 48 years old now and live in California. I have not told this story in nearly 30 years and never talked about it with anyone that was not there that night for fear of being called a liar. I read the entire thread and decided to give my accounts of that night since so many seemed interested. I did not know the house and bridge were gone until I read it here. I have looked at the area on Google maps and thought it was where those culverts are now but decided it was way to overgrown. It was called Payne Rd back then but now it is listed as Edwards Rd. The house was sitting on the north side of the road 36.265455,-80.274189 and the barns on the south side 36.265084,-80.273952 and the bridge was north-east of the house 36.266275,-80.273456 . The fields are now grown up with trees but you can see some plow markings still through some 36.267476,-80.275226 . I would love some feedback. Joel

That's a great story! And the fact you have kept it so clear in your mind for 30 years is impressive! That's quite an experience you all had out there. I have been out there (in the past few years) but never had any experiences. Thanks for posting your story, I enjoyed reading it!!

It was not, and NEVER was the Payne House! The property always WAS the Edwards place, before and after Milus Frank Edwards blew himself six ways from Sunday on Oct. 5, 1955... The ONLY confirmed death at that house!

Sorry... But understand, Everyone... As long as the Edward Payne Lie, and people calling the burned house the Payne House continues, I will continue to smack down this false legend. I do not doubt paranormal activity goes on out there... But the slaughtered family legend is pure, 100% unadulterated NONSENSE!

From my experience and living near Edwards road and Payne rd, I cannot find anything on Edwards residence murders. I'm guessing it is made up or misunderstood from the (lawson murders). Lawson murder is true and in a completely different area. I have experienced a car or truck scaring the crap out of us on Edwards/Payne rd and then disappeared. I do believe something fishy happened in this area but I don't know what. Maybe Moonshining or KKK or some kind of ritual. If there were people hanged there it would probably be in the tress or on the old bridge that isn't there anymore. I do believe the KKK use to have a strong presence there.

The Payne Murder legemd is bunk, just as you suspect, Todd. The death of Milus Frank Edwards at that house on October 5, 1955, is fact. I have a copy of the death certificate. he blew himself up with a stick of dynamite. Cod on the record... Decapitation due to dynamite blast. The 1992 murder of Vernice Alford also happened in the vicinity...

I just wanted to add my 2 cents. My family owns the Old farm at the end of the Payne rd/friendship road intersection. It's registered under ferguson. Also, my best friends grandparents own the land behind the cemetery where that padlocked gate is. Also all the old property that was owned by the Edwards family is now owned by the Hartgrove family. Furthermore; I went to school with the boy aged 9-12 that burnt down the old church at the graveyard and the old Edwards house, his name was Raymond and it was when I was in 4th or 5th grade between 93-94. I've camped at ravens rock (left down Payne, not right from Edwards) dirt biked it, walked, and been from one side to the next. I've seen things, heard things and experienced things on that rode at night I still think about to this day.
However, there is one death down there that is hard to trace. Bradley Hartgrove accidentally misfired his gun in the late 70s early 80s and killed his girlfriend inside the old Edwards residence. He later killed himself in a field in concord NC. The house was left vacant after his suicide. The African American prostitute that was tied to the tree and stabbed was killed behind that padlocked gate leading to the old water shed near the graveyard no where close to the old house and believe me.. She or something not friendly still stalks that area as I've seen it with my own eyes. Seven of us; myself, 2 cousins, one of their boyfriends, my two bestfriends (one that's grandparents own all the land) were chased by some strange thing off the dirt road late one night (we were walking). I then later witnessed with my mother as we were cutting through Payne/Edwards from king, the only thing I can describe it as was a demon. Pure white hunched over with large eyes. I saw it, she saw it, I was scared for my life.
There is something on Payne road. I don't know what it is but it's there. I swear on it. I've went back countless times trying to see it again without even a glance but that thing is out there.

Your description of the white creature is eerily similar to a story told to me by a Quiznos co worker years ago from Rural Hall. He described it as a pure white sasquatch-like creature, over 8 ft tall standing full strait up. Ms Alford 's murder was at the Payne end of the stretch of road, right? The cemetery up on the Rural Hall end is different from the one you mean, right? The guy who runs thye Lawswon Greoup on Facebook checked records and found RJ Reynolds as the owner of the land behind the cemetery by the railroad track up there. And, isn't Nancy Hartgrove Milus Edwards' granddaughter?

It is owned by an ex-RJR employee. They've owned the land for years and years. They hunt it every year and it backs up right to their land. I've never questioned it.
Yeah she is his grand daughter. She told me the dynamite story about 10 years ago.
AND YES. It was very tall it stood up when we sped off and I swear it was at least over 6 feet tall. Honestly, I know this sounds silly but it looked a lot like Gollum from LOTR. It was absolutely crazy and terrifying.

On Halloween, 1997, my ex-girlfriend and I drove down Payne Road. It was around midnight (the witching hour!) and we were looking for an adventure. We turned right off of Highway 66 in Rural Hall. As soon as we hit Payne Road, we both felt a heavy sensation push down on our shoulders. In fact, the sensation was there the entire time we were on the road. It could be easily shrugged off as anxiety, but I have never felt that type of pressure on my shoulders since.
If you been down Payne Road, you know how incredibly dark it is there. The only lights came from my Ford Escort's high beams. To our left was a dirt embankment & to our right was a huge field. As soon as we hit the road, my ex says, "Oh, by the way, the KKK sometimes has meetings in this area." Great, here we are, two 20-something women alone on a deserted road where the KKK has meetings. That added to my anxiety level and my foot hit the gas even harder.
Back in 1997, the road was still gravel. If you will recall, driving down a gravel road is nearly impossible at a high rate of speed. We could only manage about 30 mph and I'm sure I kept the car in 3rd gear most of the way down. I was singing to quell my fears as well!
As we drove down the relatively short drive (it seemed like forever!), we didn't notice anything particularly exciting or spooky. The dark field was ominous, but not dangerous. We finally reached the bridge and as we get near it, my ex yells "STOP THE CAR ON THE BRIDGE!" I remember thinking, "Oh hell no." I booked it over the bridge in front of a darkened house. It was really hard to do a U-turn because the road ended, but nevertheless, I managed.
As we whizzed back over the bridge, I remember checking my rear-view mirror to see bright lights on in the window of the house. We turned a corner off the bridge (well, sort of a corner) and tore out of there. I remember thinking there was no way I was going back down that road. The rest of the ride was mostly a blur of desperation and blackness. When we finally crossed off of Payne Road, only 66, I was relieved. In fact, I felt the weight lift from my shoulders, quite literally.
I wish I were making this up, but on the ride home, a black cat ran out in front of my car. I could have lost my damn mind right there.
Can anyone validate any of the things I've posted? I think someone mentioned in another Payne Road thread that they felt the heavy weight on them. Anyone else?

Loys pf people 8used to repprt that feeling. Unfortunately, you could NOT have seen lights on in the Edwards farmhoise. By 1997, the big house had been burned to ashes for mpore than 6 years, having been burned down in July, 1991... As far as the stories of some sort of massacre down there, don't believe it. Edward Payne is a made up myth. As I have stated previously, over and over, there was no one who slaughtered his family thyere. Milus Edwards blew himself up in 1955. This is documemted. He killed himself and ONLY himself. There have been other suicides, accidental killings, and murders out there over the years, but only 2 suicides were in the Edwards family, about 34 years apart... Now that it's paved, and so many hoises and the bridge are gone, it's nowhere near the spookfest it used to be...

Thanks for your reply, Michael. I am remembering a building behind us as I did my u-turn over the bridge. Any idea what I could be remembering? Admittedly, it has been 17 years since I was there. Thanks!
