Just an observation and my 2% of a buck...
I visited the property on Payne Road a few times in the 70s, but never with a "Party" attitude or on a lark. Other than an eerie feeling that I couldn't put my finger on, I never had anything happen out of the ordinary...until I went in broad daylight. What I saw kept me away for nearly 20 years, when I went back after I'd heard that the house burned. When I went, I came out of the curve and stopped when I could see the remaining foundation...turned around, and went back out the way I came in.
I believe that most of the sightings and experiences...probably 90% or more...are due to the adventure seekers believing that they're going to see something...and seeing/hearing/feeling ghosts everywhere they look. I'm not one of those people, so that probably explains why I didn't see, hear, or feel anything when I was there at night. My experience in the daylight was so subtle that I nearly missed it...but it was real, and I had a witness until he passed away a few years back. Prior to his death, we only spoke of it once, and we both admitted that we hadn't been back, despite living within 10 minutes of the place. I moved to Rural Hall in 1992 off Tuttle Road, and remained there until 2005. I made the final trip to see how much the place had changed sometime in late '99.
Going to the area in search of facts or just to see it is one thing. As long as the visit is respectful and quiet. Going to have a "Ghost Party" is another matter. Unless you're familiar with the area, you won't be able to find the spot where the house stood anyway. It's all changed so much that I could barely find it on my last visit after I'd heard about all the development and new homes being built.
There's something down there that remains to this day. It's a "feeling" that defies any other description. My advice to the ghost hunters is to go with proper reverence. Otherwise, it's probably best to stay away. Whatever it is that's there isn't your friend, and it's not hoping to contact the physical world or to convey a message. The clear message that I got lo those many years ago was to leave it alone.

I grew up in Winston and like most teenagers of the area went down Payne Rd. From time to time. I never believed the stories but always thought they were fabricated from the true Lawson murders. My great grandmother was a related Lawson. Anyway, one evening before dark when it was dusky out. I went down Payne Rd. And by the house (before it was taken down) in a tree between the house and the bridge I saw clearly a man hanging from a tree. This doesn't seem to match any stories but I know what I saw. It was so clear I insisted my friend stop the car thinking we needed to do something for this person hanging. Before he even stopped the man vanished. I never ventured down Payne Rd. Again.

The EDWEARDS hoise was burned down. The hanging man fiys one legend of a lynching. The suicides of Milis Edwards in 1955, amd Sanders speas in 1967 are fact. So is the accidental killing of Keith Hartgrove's girlfriend by him in 1988, 9amd his subsequent suicide in 1989

It is owned by an ex-RJR employee. They've owned the land for years and years. They hunt it every year and it backs up right to their land. I've never questioned it. Yeah she is his grand daughter. She told me the dynamite story about 10 years ago. AND YES. It was very tall it stood up when we sped off and I swear it was at least over 6 feet tall. Honestly, I know this sounds silly but it looked a lot like Gollum from LOTR. It was absolutely crazy and terrifying. I saw at on Styers Ferry Road across town, ya'll are describing this thing to a tee, it shuffled across the road quick. It may be a migratory creature

I'm not using my real name but I grew up on Payne Rd, I was born in the 60s it was Payne road then and still is Payne road. Not saying if the name ever changed but it wasn't in the 60s or since then. I have not only heard stories but I have actually seen things on the Payne road side and things on the Edwards road side. I remember finding dead bodies behind barns I remember seeing something float into a dog we had named Bravo and that dog was crazy afterwards. The house my grandparents lived in on that road was haunted by something, I remember we use to hear a rocking chair upstairs rocking that nobody was in. And all other kinds of things.

I just wanted to add my 2 cents. My family owns the Old farm at the end of the Payne rd/friendship road intersection. It's registered under ferguson. Also, my best friends grandparents own the land behind the cemetery where that padlocked gate is. Also all the old property that was owned by the Edwards family is now owned by the Hartgrove family. Furthermore; I went to school with the boy aged 9-12 that burnt down the old church at the graveyard and the old Edwards house, his name was Raymond and it was when I was in 4th or 5th grade between 93-94. I've camped at ravens rock (left down Payne, not right from Edwards) dirt biked it, walked, and been from one side to the next. I've seen things, heard things and experienced things on that rode at night I still think about to this day. However, there is one death down there that is hard to trace. Bradley Hartgrove accidentally misfired his gun in the late 70s early 80s and killed his girlfriend inside the old Edwards residence. He later killed himself in a field in concord NC. The house was left vacant after his suicide. The African American prostitute that was tied to the tree and stabbed was killed behind that padlocked gate leading to the old water shed near the graveyard no where close to the old house and believe me.. She or something not friendly still stalks that area as I've seen it with my own eyes. Seven of us; myself, 2 cousins, one of their boyfriends, my two bestfriends (one that's grandparents own all the land) were chased by some strange thing off the dirt road late one night (we were walking). I then later witnessed with my mother as we were cutting through Payne/Edwards from king, the only thing I can describe it as was a demon. Pure white hunched over with large eyes. I saw it, she saw it, I was scared for my life. There is something on Payne road. I don't know what it is but it's there. I swear on it. I've went back countless times trying to see it again without even a glance but that thing is out there.

Keith (also known by another name) Hartgrove's ex, and friend, told me all about that accidental shooting, and that it WAS him, and it happened at the end of the 80s. The information I had on Ms. Alford's death came from one of her social workers, who was involved in the Lawson documentary. ALL the accidental deaths, suicide, and murders in te Edwards Family are DOCUMENTED and public record, including Milus Frank Edwards and 3 of his brothers. Also, the Spease suicide in 1967 is documented, and was told to me by his daughter. And yes, the Hartgroves own it. The Hartgrove man who killed the girl by accident, then himself later, was M. f> Edwards' great grandson, Nancy Edwards Hartgrove's son, I believe. As for the fire that destroyed te Edwards Homeplace. The date on the newspaper in whicj the article and photo appear, CLEARLY shows as July 4, 1991...

Michael if I may ask how have you been researching Payne/Edwards rd? Can you please share the most bizarre story you've come across about this area
