About 20 years. The most bizarre is the fake Edward Payne story. A minister recently told me one I had never heard... That a couple's car broke down out there years ago, and thy froze to death. That's what he heard about the bridge and why cars wouldn't start. That was a new one to me...

Whatever the name was, Brian, Bradley, Keith, I can't find a single thing about the shooting of his girlfriend, or himself, other than people who remember it happening. Most say 88 or 89. It was AFTER 1986 though, as he is mentioned as a person of interest in court records of 2 trials in a shooting spree; drive by murder. One of the defendants' defense attorney recently contacted me with that info...

What has kept you interest this long? Have you been to the area yourself? If so have you had any personal experiences? It seems so unreal that so many horrible things have taken place in one area. There has to be some darkness surrounding that place.

Every time I think I have found everything, something new arises. Also, utterly CRUSHING that Edward Payne nonsense is a thing. Like Dracula, every time I think I have his fictional rear end staked for good, he rises again. And I HATE it when people perpetuate a lie with our haunted legends. It's hard enough to get people to accept the paranormal without all the BS.

Payne Rd- I lived on Payne Rd. for many years with my ex (the father of our son). While I have heard many of the stories surrounding this area, I must say I have never actually experienced any of the sort. Of course, the house was long gone, due to fire, as was the church and the bridge. We rode 4 wheelers all through the area quite frequently, even at night. Most of the land on Payne Rd is leased by hunters, as there isn't too much they can do with that property. One time, during a ride, we did come across a small house that was covered in pentagrams, crosses, etc. Needless to say, I didn't want to stick around that place for long. Going from Payne Rd to Edwards Rd on 4 wheelers, we came across what looked like an old sawmill of sorts. Again, I personally have never experienced nor saw anything that to me resembled a haunting.
Now, the neighbours I knew down the road have confirmed the Edwards story of him and the dynamite, the AA lady being beaten, even said there were a few of them down that road of the sort. Also that by a creek down there was some sort of sacrificial area with a large rock in the middle with little rocks surrounding. He confirmed there were groups of people that would conduct their rituals down there. I knew of the church and cemetery down Edwards road, which was nearby the house of M.f. Edwards. Some say the house burned down by arson, some of controlled burn. All I know of the church was that it burned some years ago.
My son, when he was younger, approx. 3 -4 would tell me that he had a brother, the name was something like conson Ronson. When I asked him where his brother lived he said the white house down the road. He also was upset one day as his brother told him he was an idiot for pooping in his pants. Poor kid. Lololol. He also told me his brother was upset because his house burned up and all of his things. I did find this interesting as my son does not have a brother.
Aside from my son's story, again, I have never experienced anything in all my travels through the roads. My husband says it's because I'm too scientific, so I won't. He does believe in such as he had an experience unrelated to this.
Just thought I would put this info out there.

Went to the School at the end of Memory lane at night, when I was a senior in High School with about 5 or 6 friends. We climbed in through a window, and then made our way through the school. The floor was falling apart, there was graffiti everywhere, a lot of occult stuff, and it was honestly one of the most creepiest places I've ever been. We all made it as far as the gym (there was a creepy open door in the gym that someone had painted TO HELL, with an arrow pointing down to the open door. I just remember thinking, "That's the darkest black that I had ever seen before." When all of a sudden we heard LOUD footsteps on the roof(?) We hightailed it out of there, and as soon as we had left I realized that I had sliced the hell out of the top of my wrist while exiting the window. We weren't supposed to be there, so I wouldn't let us go to the hospital. I still have the scar almost now, almost 20 years later.

I went to Payne road last year in the summer. It was getting dark when a friend and I decided to go and check the place out. It has been years since I last seen the place. I remember when it was just a dirt road. My friend and I were sitting on the side of the road with the car off and was seeing what would happen. Then a car came speeding down the road with bright lights came toward us. My friend started the car and starting high tailing it down the road. the car caught up to us and was right behind us. After we had lost the car my friend drove up to the same spot and we sat there agian. I think that was the only time we were chased by another car. I really don't know if it was anything weird going on considering that people actually do live on the road. Either way the place gave me the creeps not to mention the nice touch of lighting in the background and thunder. Before it was getting dark I noticed that we had passed a few deserted houses that looked like people had came by and marked grafitti on them. It looked like crosses and other symbols. Does anyone know anything about those houses? I also saw the graveyard that I have heard people talk about, someone once said that they found 2 teenagers murdered down there..I'm not sure if I am correct but has anyone else heard about this? I know there also used to be a church down there. So whats the story on Daulton Rd in King? I go through the town quite often but never once heard of this story. Yep, there was a little church down there, and it was a pretty little thing, too. It had a graveyard in the front of it. Back in the 30's my grandfather and some of his "business" associates used to do late night moonshine business there. They saw a white, translucent figure moving among the grave stones on one, just one night. They soon found another business venue and never returned.

We weren't supposed to be there, so I wouldn't let us go to the hospital. I still have the scar almost now, almost 20 years later. Up the hill from what are now the ruins of the old high school (on the Rural Hall side of the school) there used to be a very large, 3 storied, wood framed house called the Riddle House. My grandfather his wife and their entire extended family lived there in the late 30's and into the 40's....the stories I heard about that place as a kid....walking sounds, groaning under your bed, a headless figure, chains , the sound of breaking glass, foot prints in the snow that led nowhere...that place had the whole nine.
In the 60's, my uncle Frank who had lived there as a boy, was contracted by descendants of the Riddles to remodel the interior. They put about $50k into the job which was a lot of money back then. The job took 3 weeks to complete, and he was very glad that the work had gone without any spooky incidents at all. He hired a crew out of Winston that would not know any of the stories. Well, within a week of the family's moving in, they called Frank and arranged a new contract on the house: he was to tear it down, pull the foundations out of the ground, sow the ground with salt, and he was never to ask why in order to get the contract. He took the contract and told me years later that he didn't have to ask why, for he knew only too well, indeed, why.
There's been a housing development up there for years now, and I've been thousands of miles away from there for decades now, but I have often wondered if folks living up there now have, over the years, had any strange inexplicable experiences up there. From the top of that hill down through the old high school and on down and through the village of Germanton and beyond there's a lot of stories that only a few old folks like me still know, but damn few ever talk about.
