Hey all! I live on Payne Rd, and Just this past weekend we were out on our front porch, and people stopped to ask us if this was Payne Rd, and what they needed to do. We live closer to the 66 end of it. This weekend, we were 4 wheeling all back there. We do even go at night, and during the day, the most creepy thing was this fog that sat right over the creek, with the vines, and trees hanging over, it was just wierd. We go all the way from Payne Rd, to somewhere on Tate Rd. There was an old sawmill back there, where there is nothing left but a pile of wood, and there is an old house, and a barn that is dilapidated. We go everywhere, the best if night riding though.... I must say, that is kinda creepy, but other than that, I have experienced nothing. Now, we don't go to the bridge and turn our cars off, as they have replaced all the bridges, when they paved the road. We come across many "unsettling things when we ride this whole area. For instance, we cam upon a house on the left side of Payne Rd, when we were riding, and the house has tons of graffiti, and it looks like it's about to fall in. My Sister in Law and I felt a little uncomfortable as we were females, and it just had this feeling about it. We were talking to our Neighbor, and he said that Devil Worshipers used to practice their beliefs in that house. (You can't see it from the road)
I know just about everyone on this road, and even some people who live on Edwards road. Most of the people are nice, unless you start messing with their stuff. We have permission to go riding all back there, as people we know lease it to hunt. I would definitely not start messing around with the property or anything unless you get permission first.

I think they tore down the Edwards home, as the few times I have been the road, it was not there. My Fiance who has lived on this road his whole life, and so has his brother (he is 26, his brother 28) say they tore it down. There are now photos in the gallery of the Lawson Cabin, and of the house on Payne/Edwards Road. The Lawson Cabin, which stood on a long driveway off brook Cove Road, which begins right beside Watts Road, is a smaller two hundred year old, unpainted 1 1/2 story cabin. The house on Payne is a two to 2 1/2 story rambler, painted white. If you look, the houses are COMPLETELY different. This should forever lay to rest the notion that these two different homes were one and the same. This is the Edwards House. This is the Lawson Cabin.

The Edwards House is gone. Only two of the homicides alleged to have occurred on Payne/Edwards could be verified. The family massacre is a MYTH, inspired by the Lawson Family murders of 1929, which happened off Brook Cove Road!

I asked my husband about the Edwards house. He said that the man who owned it when it burned down didn't have any children. He had bought the home and was working on fixing it up when it burned.

The old man who blew himself up was the grandfather of the Stokes deputy who sold it to the final owner, who had it when it burned.

So if u dare to look or even go inside then it is the one with the kindof collum looking boards on the front the door id open its white it has i think maybe 1 window and ofcourse the cross in red painted in blood near the door. also around the cross there are litle i think to be satanic simpols!

Ack!!!! NO! NO! NO!!!! The Lawson Murders, as has been well established, did NOT occur on Payne or Edwards. The Lawson Farm (the house is long gone) is at the intersection of Brook Cove and Watts Roads, a few mile from the Payne/Edwards area. The same creek passes through both properties. THIS IS THE ONLY CONNECTION!!!!! From Bole Jack (PayneRd's Hwy 8 end), go south on 8 past Germanton School. BrookCove is on the left. The Lawson Property is now posted, which is strictly enforced. The Browder Cemetery is up a PRIVATE dirt road, just after you turn left onto Brook Cove. Again, for the last time. CHARLIE LAWSON IS NOT CONNECTED TO PAYNE ROAD!!!! People who say the Lawson Murders took place on Payne or Edwards are simply ignoring historical, physical FACT!!! I have been trying to put this right for YEARS!!!

That is such a huge misconception I don't know if it will ever fully go away.

I have been trying to put this right for YEARS!!! Michael, you will never be able to "put this right". I've almost given up. Some people are going to believe this forever. I think "guy" was just being silly, trying to rile up something cuz how could he say that if he had read ANY of the 9 pages of this post! That's why I didn't even respond to him. I admire your tenacity to keep trying though!!!

Yep, some crazed Alphalfa-looking ghost chasing after goofs who continually place him where he never was. Bet it STILL wouldn't straiten it all out though! Somebody would insist it wasn't him!!! lol...

I've heard of Payne Road my entire life, and I've lived in Stokes county my whole life, but I had never been down there until this past weekend. I've never felt anything so negative or powerful in my short life! While we were down there strange things did happen. We drove up and down from the bridge to the cemetery a couple of times. We noticed that at the bottom of the curves on Edwards road there was a strange light coming from the woods, and there was a lot of traffic for a backroad at 1 am. The second time we came around we saw a lot of cars parked off the road hidden away from by trees, and every time we stopped for whatever reason we were chased off by somebody. The second time we stopped on the bridge beside the footbridge, I heard what sounded like chains rattling. We also stopped at the two houses (the ones with the cross and such). We didn't get out and explore, as I felt just weak and drained, but I noticed there were chains in the two oak trees out front. The second time we passed the parked cars I felt what can be likened to extreme dread and sickness. We both felt it as we passed by. I remember saying "Get us outta here!" and we sped through the curves and out of the area. I felt light headed and dizzy, and can't really remember a few minutes during then. We went back the next afternoon during the sunlight hours, so I could see what is really out there. I didn't feel as dreadful or light headed, but got a tad dizzy. I did notice that for a July evening it was really cold in that general area. The only way to sort of describe it is it reminded me of how cold a hospital is. When I got back to my sister's house (I was spending the weekend watching her two dogs), I feel asleep, but not very good. I still felt like I was awake. But I dreamed of a girl with long blonde hair wearing a white dress. I told my friend about it, but he was the one who described her to me as I was telling this. He said he had seen her out in the Payne road area (because Edwards road used to be Payne) and that's how he knew what she looked like.
My question is has anyone else seen this girl? Who is she? I know she's not one of the Lawson girls (as has been said, different area). Also the Lawson girls had dark hair. The dress is of a style that dates to before the Lawson murders too.
I plan on going back, and would like to walk around and see what's there. I do want to find out what the legend is too. There is something that draws me into it now that I've been.
