The flour or powder on the trunk thing has been debunked over and over. It is where the oils from your hands linger when you open or close the trunk, and the powder simply draws it out. While there might be some truth to some of these stories somewhere, the overwhelming majority are simple optical illusions, created by the slopes of two roads at different grades. If you stood at the one above Elkin, you would SWEAR it goes downhill from US 21, but it does NOT. It is just that the slope of US 21 is far greater than the slope of Old 21. If you don't believe it, just stand at the intersection with US 21 and either walk, run, or ride a bike to the end of the pavement and that abandoned house. You will be left with no doubt (lol... and no breath!) as to the true grade of the road... I imagine this is true with 90% of these "gravity hills..."

We used to go to after spending the day at Dan Nicolas Park all the time when I was a kid and it almost always worked. In fact I can only think of one time that it didn't work. No matter the explanation, it's a pretty spectacular experience.

I'm a long time resident of Craven, NC (High Rock Lake/Salisbury, NC). I've always heard about "Gravity Hill"...some folks around here call it "Mystery Hill" and some just call it "The Ghost of Lick Creek". After doing some research, I learned that it is located off of Bringle Ferry Road (Salisbury, NC) as soon as you turn right onto Lick Creek Road, which is about 5-min from my home. This is located in Rowan County and is just beyond crossing the bridge behind the Dam of High Rock Lake on Bringle Ferry Rd. Just after crossing the bridge, there is a RR Crossing and Lick Creek Road is immediately on the right. Story/Legend has it, a young girl was ran over and killed there back in the mid 1800's and left on the side of the road where she eventually died. Her ghost still haunts the spot where she was killed. I had always heard that if you go there at night, she will push your car up the hill. The exact location is as soon as you turn onto Lick Creek Road. You stop your vehicle, put it in neutral, and wait...sometimes she's there, sometimes not...but if she is, your vehicle will be pushed uphill for approx. 1/4 of a mile. I went there with two other people tonight and it worked! We did it three times forward, and twice in reverse. We were too scared to get out to look for fingerprints and kept the doors locked. I live about 5-minutes from there, so as soon as we got home, we took a flashlight and found smeared handprints on the rear tailgate of my truck, and on the hood/front grill. These were very visible on my black vehicle. All I can say is, she must be a strong Ghost to push a Honda Ridgeline truck that far uphill! Very cool way to spend an evening too! So I, and two other's, are now believer's!!! Try it for yourself...

Ran over in the mid 1800's? So, she was killed by a horse and wagon or buggy? Interesting... Zero automobiles in the mid 1800's, so that would be the oldest of these gravity Hills across the South...

I agree, keep a little mystery to it all. No reason to take the fun out of it.

Part of being a paranormal investigator is finding the truth, whether it supports a legend or not. Good ghost stories are really cool, but we need to distinguish between real incidents and fictional stories. If I find something to support a particular story or theory, I work ro see it kept. But false stories, though some are cool for thrills, only cloud the spookscape, and make the job of finding the reral deal more difficult for those who are seriously investigating the paranormal...
