No, I'm not talking about Stephen King's stay at the Stanley, which inspired THE SHINING. This is NC's own murder/ghost story.
Yesterday was a beautiful day. I got with my sis, Amy, and we did some picture taking. Our afternoon model, however, wasn't able to come. We decided to try to find a haunted house we'd been wondering about.
Sorry everybody, there just wasn't time to get to the internet, and I didn't have ANYONE'S number on me (as I said, it was a model shoot day), so there wasn't any possibility of mounting a full expedition.
I wrote about the House of the Red Room in ROADSIDE REVENANTS. I had thought I'd misplaced the house in the book by using US 64 as a reference point. Turns out, you CAN get to it using 64!
The site is on Point Road, a dead ender off Cherry Hill Road in Davie County. From Winston, we took I-40 west to NC 801 South. We crossed US 64, remaining on 801. After a few miles, Cherry Hill is on the left. Continuing on this road, we found Point Road beside an old abandoned, locked up white church, just like the story says. If we'd gone strait instead of turning onto Point, we would have run into US 601 just south of New Bethel Church, and just a little north of the South Yadkin River Bridge.
Point Road is now paved. We went all the way to the end, and found a house on the LEFT that we believed to be the red room house. A person we met on the road on our way out confirmed this.
Unfortunately, neither of us took any pictures there. It was getting dark, for one thing, and I hadn't scouted the area. Also, the land is posted, so we didn't get out of the car. Intend to find the owners, though, and go back if they'll permit.
The house we found was not the great monolith described to me by my pal Jeff. It MIGHT have had a loft or half story on top, but looking dead on at the front, we just couldn't tell. It also seems to be under restoration, which would be nice, meaning this one won't be lost to the elements. A truck was parked by it, so we decided not to train the headlights on the house, just in case someone was there who would be unfriendly.
On the way out, we encountered a man and his wife. The man called a relative who confirmed that we had indeed found our target. The sealed church there, by the way, also has ghostly tales associated with it, which I must uncover from locals.
Anyone from around the Cooleemee area? Does anyone know any of the stories associated with this house or the church? Please let us know.
