I never realized how many historic places are in Jamestown. I do plan to go down sometime and check the them out. One place that gives me the creeps is the Potter house. Anyone have any stories? I would really love to get to know more about the town.

Well, if the Mr. Potter who lived there was ANYTHING like the Mr. Potter in "It's A Wonderful Life," then there's probably a nasty ghost! lol...

Hey guys, if you go, I was wrong about the house on the hill above the Underpass. That is the Ragsdale House. The Richard Mendenhall Plantation is about a milke or two further towards High Point on that same road. His father's home is now under High Point Lake. I have also heard that the underpass built to replace the original (Lydia's) has either collapsed or been torn down, and that you can't get through there, or couldn't a week ago. That's from the guy who's doing the Mystery Inc. ghost tours...

Saw on the news last night. The Potter House is to be torn down, and a fast food restaurant will be put in its place! SACRILEGE!!! If anyone in Jamestown has the dough, SAVE the old place!

Well, they've voted to rezone it. Unless something major happens, Good-bye Potter House, Hello Bojangles...

The last time I was in Jamestown (maybe a month ago), the original underpass at Lydia's bridge is still there.
Looks like the did some serious construction either in or around it though, but it is actually easier to access now.
Never heard of the potter house though? Where exactly is it?

Right in Jamestown. It will soon be replaced by a Bojangles... The track was widened, so the underpass had to be widened. I feel I must repeat... UNLESS my hardworking pal Becky has found something new, there is ABSOLUTELY NO evidence to support the Lydia story. I have looked at it ad nauseum, and ALL Lydias seems to be accounted for. I know Haunted NC has one Lydia Jane McCarthy listed as the girl, but she is decidedly NOT. She was in her 70's when she died! This has been verified at NC Vital Records... I talked to some elderly folks back in the 80's and 90's who were alive in 1923, and DO remember a fatal crash at that underpass, though they weren't sure if it WAS 1923, and none thought the girl's name was Lydia. It is further complicated by the name of the supposed first person to report seeing her, in 1924. The author of the book AN ILLUSTRATED GUIDE TO GHOSTS IN THE OLD NORTH STATE, the first to write about her, told me the name she used for the truck driver was a pseudonym, used to protect his privacy. Thus we know now that Burke Hardison was not his real name. And one more thing. Let's face it folks, of ALL the people who have supposedly stopped for her, not A SINGLE ONE remembers the address?! Come on! That would be burned in my brain forever! Sorry to stick a pin in the bubble, but I just don't think she was ever there. Some people have gotten EVP's there. Doesn't mean it was from that crash. There are plenty of places nearby for a roaming ghost to come from, especially since people are drawn there. People also tell me they get off the chart EMF readings there. No freakin' wonder... If you look up the hill on the Greensboro side, there is a MASSIVE power substation there! EMF is useless in that area... And that high EMF can cause feelings of being watched, paranoia, skin crawling and irritation, headaches, etc... Photos showing whispy figures? Again, not necessarily from that crash. The Ragsdale House is just up the hill, and there have been other accidents in the area. No, I'm afraid without real evidence, I have to say Lydia is a fairy tale. If she existed, Becky or I, or SOMEONE would have found her by now...

Our group went to Jamestown, to the Mendenhall plantation & toured, we also saw the Potter's House& Lydia's Bridge. Has anyone been there recently to see if they have torn it down? It breaks my heart to see all of the history scraped up by a bulldozer.
