wow, michael, why are you getting so upset with autumn rose?? I'm sure you do know alot about the payne/edwards family, but why go so balistic on someone who is merely voicing an opinion. Is'nt this site and many other forums made for people to voice their personal experiences or opinons. You have definitely made it clear that you know an abundance of info on many subjects. Just get a grip and let others speak their mind. I mean no ill harm, just as you I am voicing my opinion. Maybe you should go back and re-read what you wrote and maybe you will see how many of us feel.
Peace Lily

Cause he's the King of all that is paranormal. He knows everything about the UNKNOWN. Which is funny since everything in the paranormal world is guesswork and unprovable. But shhhh! He has spoken, so it must be so!

It was the comment about the photo which set me off, the one I quoted. The young lady says she wasn't trying to start anything, and apologized for such. So I'll take her at face value and say sure, fresh starts... As for guest guest... I'd say you are just one of those who enjoys stirring a pot, and dismiss you as such. Ass for Lily, if you will look at the quoted thing, you will see what got at me, as it would anyone. And, in the interest of being fair and looking for the truth, as we ALL seek to do, I have forwarded the info about those folks' names to a couple of geneological and historical societies to see if something can be found. The time period we are talking about is fairly narrow, as far as historical and geneological research goes... about a century and a half during which the event could have happened. I hope we DO find something new, because that would explain a lot. However, I have to say that what several people, including some who have been at this longer than the twenty plus years I have, haven't found it. Anyway, Autumn, as far as I am concerned, we're good... Hope you enjoy this forum, and can learn whatever you wish to...

You are welcome... So far, census records for Forsyth and Stokes Counties haven't yielded anything, bit they are still researching the names you provided... Will let you know when i hear more. We will find something, I think. Already found that Washington Payne also owned property on the other Patne Rd., out at Donnaha...

Hey just checking to see if anything new came up.I have been reading a few things and there something im not clear on most people are saying that (mr.payne or edwards which ever he may be if anything) burned his house down when he got done murdering them with them in the house, which doesnt explain what most of the people you will find in germanton were i live will say ,they say that the house burned downed in the early 90s which tell me the confusion that can be caused , so if you know about this tell me what you think really happened on that subject anyways. Its very confusing. Thanks alot again.

The house on Edwards Rd., often called Payne rd., did burn in the mid 1990's. I've heard different stories of why and how. I've heard lightening struck it, and I've heard it was intentionally burned because of all the controversy, and extensive vandalism. This is the house at which Mr. M. F. Edwards killed himself with a stick of dynamite in 1955. NCBec can probably tell you more about that. It is the house where so many people said the Payne Massacre happened, and it is also the house where so many people have misplaced Charlie Lawson and his deeds to. Somewhere here, I had photos posted which show the two different houses, The Edwards and the Lawson, to show just how different they were. There is also a map posted on the Camel City Spirit Seekers google site, which shows the locations of the former Lawson Farm, the Browder cemetery, and the Edwards House, which shows how they are situated in completely different locations. I'm not sure where the Edwards House got mixed into the Payne Legend. There are the remains of a burnt house on the actual Payne Rd., and I wonder if this one might be the Payne Family's house in the area. I haven't heard anything beyond the census results yet. May not til after 1st of the year, with people wrapped up (pun DEFINITELY intended, lol) in the Christmas and New Year holidays. Speaking of... MERRY CHRISTMAS, Everyone!

I doubt anyone will read this after so many years since the last post, but...My great grandparents (the Hill family) owned a farm towards the other end of that road that eventually runs into #8 going back to Germanton. I recall from childhood stories about a big white house beyond that steel gate. My grandfather used the old graveyard as a moonshine drop point back in the '30's. Smack dab between the old road and the Lawson place over beyond Germanton, there use to be the Riddle farm that was also supposed to be haunted. It was a huge old house on a hill just outside of Germanton going towards Rural Hall and very close to the old Germanton school house. I have never seen anything on the web about that God awful place. My grandfather (the bootlegger) also owned that place for a while. The stories were quite chilling. H e was Will Plummer, Germanton barber...he eventually committed suicide in his little shop. Ironically, because he couldn't read or write, there was no note of "why" left behind.

We can now say definitively that the Payne Story can not have taken place anytime in the 80 years before the infamous Lawson Murders. That is, Census records and other records clearly show that no one with the names provided could be found between 1849 and 1929. Had such a thing taken place since 1929, it would have been all over the papers, tv, radio, etc... with inevitable comparisons to the Lawson case. Now, to concentrate on the period before 1849. Since it's said they moved from Kentucky, we need not go back more than 75 years from 1849, as Kentucky was not opened up for settlement until Daniel Boone blazed his trail there in the 1700's. I WAS able to find rumored allegations of a murder in the Payne Family, however. But it was a story about the daughter of Washington Payne. The details are sketchy, and it is only an allegative rumor, ie, completely unsubstantiated, but some people seem to think there was a question of whether or not she killed her husband. Like I said, this must be considered apocyphal, because we have no evidence that she actually did such a thing. Most sources refute the allegation.
