My sister and I have lived in Winston-Salem all of our lives. I'm not sure if you have the stories straight about payne/edwards road and the Lawson Murders. The Lawson murders did not occur on Payne or Edward roads. This incident happened on Brook Grove Road which is located in Stokesdale, Walnut cove. The Browder cemetary which is located on Brookgrove Road, is where the Lawsons are buried, and further down the road is where the old homestead once sat, but is now occupied by a new owner in a new home, except an old shed that has been there since the Lawsons lived there. The covered bridge is also on this property which is built from the blood-stained floor boards from the original murder scene. Anything else said about the details of this case is a hoax. I've been gathering info for many years and know this to be true. The home is up for sale right now, (by Pudential), for what reason I do not know. The incidents on Edwards road is totally different from the Lawson Murders. I'm not quite sure how that road even came into play to the facts in this murder except maybe gossip. I have not personally experienced anything abnormal while visiting the gravesite. However while inside the covered bridge was a different story. I had a creepy experience. The gravesite only made me feel sad. There are many children and babies buried there(sad!). If you have any questions, please feel free to email me. There is another book coming out in October about these murders: It is called "The Meaning of Our Tears", which is a quote from the gravesite. No one will ever know why Charlie Lawson killed his family, except him and God. I only feel sorry for the innocent that suffered from his hands and the son which is now dead but survived his evil. It must have been tortue to live the life he had to endure after his family was murdered by his own father. He now lays to rest right above his family's grave in the same cemetery. Here's wishing everyone peace and happiness in this lifetime......Lakegal

One more thing concerning the "Lawson Murders". There is a barber named "Bill" that has his shop in downtown Walnut Cove. He has been in this particular business for over 40 years and knows the area and has valuable info on the "Lawson Murders". He was very kind and helpful to my sister and I while we were investigating the story. He even showed us a photo of the murder scene and an old newspaper clipping of the "Murders/funeral" of the Lawson family. Also, for those of you that haven't seen a family photo of the Lawson's, there is one on the gravesite in the old Browder cemetery. You can visit "Bill" anytime on Main Street in downtown Walnut Cove, (he is a very sweet man!) Happy Hauntings........

Bill is a darling...hubby has gotten his hair cut there for quite a while. Joe Beasley used to run a store over on Hwy 8. They closed about a year or so ago. He had reproductions of the newspaper for about $5 each. No idea where he got them or if he still has them.

Hi all, was wondering if I might request something. Along my recent studies of ghost hunting I have viewed many web sites. I LOVE the pics on this site, they are superb. But I'm lost as to the story behind the "ghosts". Have I missed the history lesson, or is it not on the site? I will google the afore mentioned names and try to find the history. But you might want to add them to your site if they are not already on here somewhere and me being the blonde I am have just missed them, THANKS!

Just ran across this site by chance doing a search for Payne Road info. We visited the site as teens in the mid-90s. (I grew up in Winston.) Scary stuff...but not from just ghosts. As the first post in this thread says, if you're unlucky like we were, you might stumble upon a KKK meeting going on there late at night. Now I can only wonder....is there a connection between the Payne Road events and why the Klan would want to meet there? Creepy. -rob

I haven't been in that area in a long time, but I do know this. Trooper Dunn (sp?) used to ride around and follow people with his headlights off. Sneaky one. Not trying to debunk anything, just thought I'd add that as a headlights on then off theory. He's done that to my husband many times. I don't know if he still does this, though. May have to ride out there at night sometime soon... ;D

Hi Guys, I am new to North Carolina only been here over a year now.. friends of mine live in King, NC and took my husband and I out to the Payne Road area last night, very very scary gave me major chills. The road that goes off to the right of Payne Road has an old orange car outside and has a small house with a red cross painted on it and a small shack next to it then up the road 1/4 mile or less is the cemetary. What if any does the particular house with the red cross have to do with anything concering or related to this story. Does anyone know anything about the other murder in that area not related to the Lawson murders. Very curious about the history. Thanks!

Well, we went Saturday night before last. We were telling our daughter the stories, spooking her, and shortly after we told her the headlights one, it happened. Unfortunately (or fortunately, however you want to look at it...) it was a punk kid. He came out of nowhere, got on our bumper, and flashed his lights repeatedly. We saw him pull into the gas station at the end of the road. My husband was pretty mad, considering the curves on that road and how dangerous it was for the guy to do that. The kiddo will never forget it, though. ;D The road is completely, 100% paved now, including the bridge. We went back yesterday, in daylight. The bridge that was mentioned earlier in this thread that is on the side of the road is not technically on Payne. It is on Bolejack Rd, and goes nowhere. It leads into the woods, and drops off, no way a car could drive on that, the trees and growth are very high. So, I'm not sure if the steps were put in front of it to keep people from driving on it, I'm leaning toward decoration purposes. It is maintained, with a lawn ornament and flowers beside it. And it has a cement foundation on either side of the entrance of the bridge, which looks like it's been there many years. There is a driveway just past it, which leads to a clearing. Not sure why it's there, and it's all red mud and VERY rutted, if you value your car, you won't pull in too far. All we saw there were HUGE dog pawprints, and deer prints, side by side. That was enough for me, I don't play with dogs I don't know. As for the clearing, well, with the KKK rumors, that looks like a possibility, but who knows? Hope this clears up any confusion over which road, where, etc.

Hi all! Went to Payne Rd. yesterday afternoon, on a lark after reading the posts. My question about where to park may have already been answered by "ladybug." I did not feel comfortable parking anywhere around there in the daylight. I am almost sure the remnants of the farm/plantation are just past the bridge on the right. Does this sound correct? If so, there looks to be a home that is occupied very close to the site. Did anyone else notice the abundant "NO TRESPASSING" signs on almost every telephone pole on this road? I am quite sure I will return, just out of curiosity, but not alone. Happy hunting!

You know I have grown up my whole life within 10 minutes from Payne / Edwards Rd. Matter of fact I cant even remeber how many times I have ever been down this road. Alot of the persona has been lost now that they have paved it and alot of the building destroyed that were abandoned. But I can say for fact I have traveled some days and been perfectly fine then other nights I have traveled it and turned back for being that uncomfortable. Lesson has always taught me if your body is telling you no dont push own follow your instinct. But I can tell you from my experience as a Rural Hall Fire Fighter that many of the structures on that road were burned in an arson manner. It was not uncommon. Matter of fact many of the structures whether they were the old barns, the original house that stood in the curve at the bottom of the hill on Edwards (the old farm house in mention) and even the old church that stood at the old graveyard which no one has bothered to mention were all burned in a arsonist manner. Now I believe also that many of the anomilies that go on down there are not helped out by the fact that as previous people have said that the KKK and even another group not mentioned but satanist have practiced there rituals and activities down on this road. And I will tell you I have covered many areas of Payne and Edwards with the Fire Dept. and I have felt uneasy to work down there in the middle of the night. Now whether some of the tention was from rumors from childhood or if they were warranted for a good cause I will never know but as I said at first common sense always says follow you instinct and sometimes for your own safety. As for people from the past I dont know, as for the past rearing its ugly head I dont know, or even the chance of it all being folklure thats not for me to answer but like I said I have had conscience notions in the past telling me to stop and turn back and not follow he distance of the road and I was not traveling alone so its not the fact of felling alone that bothered me so you can take that for what you want when I have traveled the road before without problem and then after midnight one night only going 1/2 mile down Payne form Friendship and turning around before getting to where the old bridge used to be for the reason of feeling dread and fear. Otherwise its up to the sceptics to answer for themselves. But if you want to travel thats up to you but dont act a fool for it leads to a one way trip to the graybar inn in Danbury (the NCSHP and Stokes County SD dont play) they dont ask they just give free rides. Anyways good luck and all be safe in your adventures.

I am very sorry to read the post about running up on a KKK meeting. Ashamidly, my family was very active in the KKK and these meetings are not just happened upon. This is a very organized and secretive group, and nothing is left to chance. Please do not think that a group of locals that meet in the dark of night and risk being discovered have anything to do with the Klan.

As a side note to the reply I just gave, there are chapters of the KKK in Stokes County, but no "meeting places" are or have been within that counties bounderies in the last 50+ years.

Hi there. I'm writing to tell you about a few experiences I and a few of my friends had at this site. The first time we drove down that road, we noticed that the high beams on the car had been...somehow diminished. It was like I had turned them on low beams. It was like the darkness of the woods closed in on you. We have experienced numerous cold spots while going down this road, when the heat was on full blast. We also stopped on the bridge for a moment or two [to see if the stories were true] and then found numerous small handprints on the windows--Even one right by my head, a small heel of a palm. I then watched, mesmerized, as a thumb slowly appeared. Needless to say, I scooted on my way. We have also witnessed strange lights where there normally wouldn't be any source for them, as well as odd figures. The cemetery you mentioned has also given us a bit of a scare. According to what a friend told me, a church burned down there. We parked there, to talk about what we had seen previously. I turned off the headlights, and when I looked up I was extremely shocked. Now, before I tell you what I saw, I should explain that when your headlights are on, the woods are dense and you can't really see anything, but when you turn them off, it's like there are very few trees. Well, the trees that stood out to us were in a rather odd shape. They form a steeple at the top and continue down to look like the wood frame of a church. We have also noticed moving figures in the trees as well. And lastly, those strange cars. Did you by chance noticed what type of car/truck it was? We had an incident earlier where we met a red car that nearly ran us off the road, as well as a truck. They were both going down the road toward some other country roads. They turn right, and we do a U-turn and go on our merry way back the way we came. 4 or 5 minutes later we see the same car and truck, coming back up the road. This is physically impossible because there are no other entrances to this road! Very very odd. All in all, this is a very strange place. My friends and I have started to research it to see what we can find.. Happy Hauntings ~Kitty and friends
