Dave... The elusive IG Greer Ghost-Appalachian State University
He was called Michael in my day, for some reason, but originally, he was known as Dave. The story... A young man has a run-in with the head of the music department. In a heated exchange, he tells the professor, "You just wait til I die... I'm gonna haunt the HELL outa you!" (Alternate story, he failed out)
Flash forward a few weeks/months. The boy's girlfriend is to give a recital in IG Greer Theater... She waits for him to show to give it. Finally, towards the end of the night, she sees him and gives her recital (Other versions say she heard his saved seat squeak).
After the recital, she is told the news. Her beloved "Dave" was killed in a motorcycle (or car) accident on US 321 between Boone and Blowing Rock... She could NOT have seen him, for he was already dead! His ghost has been seen in IG Greer ever since...
A student from 1972 told me the original story. It was related to her by Dr. Phillip Paul. Supposedly, the Dept. Chair, Dr. Spencer would NOT stay in Greer at night alone after that. Dr, Paul later occupied the office Spencer had used, and Dave's ghost was also said to hang out there...
Dr. Phillip Paul joined the faculty at Appalachian State University in 1966 as an instructor in the Hayes School of Music, and, in 1968, he was promoted to assistant professor. On leave from Appalachian State from 1969 to 1970, he was a part-time instructor of music while working on his doctorate at the University of Georgia. Granted tenure at Appalachian State in 1972, he became an associate professor in 1974 and a full professor in 1978. This information significantly narrows my window of search for "Dave..."
Dr. William Gilbert Spencer (June 22, 1921- August 30, 2010). became Chairman oof the Music Dept. in 1958.in 1972, Spencer resigned as chair of the Department of Music, though he continued to teach at the school...This is the Dept. head "Dave" had a run in with, and threatened to "haunt the hell out of..."
If Dr. Paul knew Dave personally, his ghost story began either 1966-1969, or 1970-72. Will be much easier to find now. The search for "Dave" begins...
