Hi,
Just trying to research any sightings / incidents from something that happened to myself and a family members years ago - probably 30 or so years. My parents and I were driving back from Hickory (to Greensboro), and to the best of my memory we were somewhere between Statesville and Clemmons. It was night, late (after 10:00) but bright from a full-ish moon.
On the right side / shoulder of the road (headed East) both my mom and I saw a very tall man (semi transparent) in a top hat and full tail tuxedo bow to us as we passed. We were probably only going 55-60 mph, as was more normal then. I sort of hesitated before I said anything, but then asked my mom if she saw the man. Before I finished, she said, "the man in the tuxedo? That was really strange."
I would swear to this day that was my first ghost encounter.
Has anyone here heard / encountered a story about that area?

Hey, thanks for posting your encounter here. I live in the very northern corner of Rowan County (very close to both the Iredell and Davie County lines), and I'm also about 10 minutes or less from both exits 162 and 168. I've traveled that stretch of I-40 between Clemmons and Statesville quite a bit at night, but have personally never witnessed anything. That being said, it is kind of a desolate stretch of highway with woods on each side for much of the way, and not much traffic, depending on the time of night. While I can't say what exactly you saw (or what it's attached to/why it was there), the most "natural" possible reason I could imagine for seeing a ghost there would be, with most roadways, a traffic accident victim. Besides that, though, there are some historic sites immediately off I40 (that you can't see from the interstate) as you're passing through this area. For example, you have Bear Creek right off exit 168, the site of a tract of land that once belonged to Squire Boone (and later Daniel Boone). For a man in a tuxedo, however, what might be more relevant is there's an old church (I can't recall the name right now, but I'll try to look it up; all I remember is it looks VERY similar to the purportedly haunted Cherry Hill Lutheran Church on Point Road, also in Davie County) that sits just out of site from I40 near an overpass that runs between exit 162 and 168. I remember Cherry Hill Lutheran was built in the early 1870's, if I recall correctly, and this church was, I believe, built in the 1830's. The only other thing I can think of regarding that stretch of I-40, is a rumor a member of my team heard years ago that we were never able to follow up on about a house somewhere in Davie County along I-40. I don't personally know the location, but when we were discussing making contact with the owners and trying to investigate there, the team member who knew the location mentioned its proximity to I-40 and we were actually having discussions on how to deal with/minimize noise contamination from the interstate if we investigated there. From my understanding, the location is a very old farmhouse (and I believe there is an old cemetery on the property, unless I'm getting it confused with another location), and the reports from our contact included everything from the typical spectral footsteps in the house to the story of a pistol picking itself up off a surface, floating in midair, and pointing at someone in the home. Again, though, I didn't know the exact location of the property except it was in Davie County and "very close to I-40", and there's no way to know if the accounts of paranormal activity there were factual or just rumors. Living so close, I'm interested to hear if anyone else has any experiences along this stretch of I-40 or the immediate area as well.
