The road has simply been redone. The old bridge, I do believe, is where the scenes were shot for the Lawson Documentary in which they explained how the Lawson story got mixed up with the Payne Rd. legends. Edwards Rd. is the actual road where the Edwards (mistakenly called Payne) House once stood, and where the vast majority of the ghostly legends are supposed to have occurred. The road now called Payne ends at Friendship, and becomes Bolejack, which runs into Hwy 8 north of Germanton School. If you go right on 8, you will pass the newer Germanton Elementary School, and a couple miles beyond that, you come to Brook Cove Road on your left. The Browder Cemetery, where the Lawsons are buried, is in the woods by this intersection, and the Lawson Farm is down Brook Cove Rd., just at the intersection with Watts Road. The farm is fenced in now, and posted, so don't try to go in there unless you want trouble with the current owners... Edwards road was once called Payne Rd.

Yes, this is true. However, the house was the EDWARDS house, as Edward Payne is a myth...

***michael818*** will you contact me please? I would like to talk to you because you seem to be the only one here that is knowledgeable enough about the area to speak with..... you can reach me at concretefire@hotmail.com
To all the others, no offense, but I only read ONE post NOT from Michael818 that was credible......and michael818, you will want to know which one I am talking about.
Now, here's my "story". I live in Charlotte. I have good friends in Winston Salem, Rural Hall area. I also grew up in Winston Salem/clemmons/lewisville area. I had NEVER heard of the "Payne Rd" thing....
So anyway, as an adult, I travel up there from time to time to visit and go camping. Sometimes we camp at hanging rock area, and other local places. Sometimes they are private property. Sometimes not.
Anyway, to be clear.......I have camped SEVERAL TIMES at the "bottom" of Edwards rd. If you come from the Rural Hall side down Edwards Rd, just past the tight twists and turns, there is a large field on the RT hand side of the Rd. You can google this and see for yourself. You can even follow the field to the corner near the creek and see the burn barrels we use while we are out there to stay warm.
I never knew until recently that this place that I LOVE to go to is supposedly so "creepy, spooky, weird, etc..." To me, it was and still is just a beautiful spot to camp. I have never experienced anything at all down there. Not even a little bit.
How I found out? One night while we were camping, a car came down the rd and stopped on the road. Some kids got out and ran around the car??? Got back in and drove off. I asked someone "what was that all about?" And that is how I found out. Even THEN, That night, I felt utterly safe and utterly NOT creeped out. It's just a beautiful spot really. Nothing creepy at all.
Now, the Charlie Lawson thing is creepy and I have come to the conclusion that Michael818 is correct. While the Lawson place is very close, it's not on the same rd, and I can't find anything that would suggest Edwards Rd/Payne Rd is involved in anything factual creepy.....
Factual creepy = killing your family and then yourself, ala Charlie Lawson.
Having said all that, I would still like to talk to michael818 via email if possible. You know your stuff. Please email me. Thanks

Mike from CLT:
Being from W-S, in HS we used to ride up to Payne/Edwards Rd when it was gravel and some of the older shacks and the house and bridge were still there. I always thought it was supremely creepy, but probably because of the tall tales my friends had told me before we got there. Sometimes it's just a case of "what you don't know won't hurt you" because you really just scare yourself most of the time anyway.
Taking away what I have been told/know about the area, I can see why it might be a nice place to camp. I even found the area you were talking about on Googlemaps. nice little confluence of streams--If I hadn't spooked myself about the area already, I would consider it a nice place to camp as well.
I don't know the specific location, but a prostitute from Patterson Ave. was raped, beaten, stabbed and left to die out there, so some twisted stuff has gone down in the vicinity.
Michael is indeed an asset to this board (judging from the short time I've been posting here).

Thank you both. I will email you soon. Two DOCUMENTED deaths have occurred down there; a grandfather who blew himself up, and an alleged prostitute who was murdered at the big tree(gone) by the bridge(also gone). There is also an unverified rumor of a negro lynching at the same tree. Wasn't able to document, but wouldn't be surprised, as the Klan has a strong presence in the area. Also "Devil Worshipers" have been caught fooling around out there. Most of the stories, however, are BUNK...

Just to let you know, though, there are several great people on here. NCbec, lilghost87, GhostlyGoddess, Eikon, Stang, & Chris to name a few. If you go throught the threads, you will find that there are some who are NOT fans of mine... lol...

Hello, everyone. On mine and Sis's new site for Camel City Spirit Seekers, I have posted a map of the area around Rural Hall and Germanton. The sites of the Edwards House (Payne/Edwards Rd.), the site of the former Lawson Farm, and the Browder Cemetery are ALL clearly marked. Looking at this, which is backed up by DEEDS & RECORDS, it should be FOREVER dispelled that the Lawson murders have ANY connection to Payne Rd. They are MILES apart. This should also make it clear that the road by the Lawson place was NEVER Payne Road! I have seen some old USGS maps which place Browder Cemetery on Payne, near Edwards Rd. The USGS was WRONG! For whatever reason, they got the location completely wrong on those maps, and Browder is located where MY map places it, within a few dozen yards! Many of you, including lilghost, ncbec, ghostlygoddess, etc... have been there with me and saw the mass family grave of Charlie Lawson, his wife, and children. The link to our site is below so you can see the map... sites.google.com/site/camelcityspiritseekers

Nice map. What do you think of the abandoned house with the cross painted on it? Are there buildings where the old Edwards house was? Things look different now than they used to.

No, those are WAY up the road towards Rural Hall. The familes who lived there moved. I haven't found ANYTHING about these two houses at all, but the signs indicate that someone at least THINKS they have bound something not so nice up in there. A word of caution. IF, and I DO mean IF there is something bound in there, I would NOT want to be the one to mess with the precautions taken, and free it... I believe there are still outbuildings, the foundation of the house, and the foundation of the barn which was blown up...

That shit is fucking wackkkk!!!!!!!! I went and nothing happened, there were no rear headlights, there was nothing scary about it, it was just a plain old road, i went over the bridge, and my car didn't turn off, I had no creepy feeling or anything of that nature

Ummm... there IS no bridge now where the haunte one used to be. It's been replaced with a culvert. You must have been on the actual Payne Rd, instead of Edwards, which is the haunted area. People CALL it Payne Rd., but it's really Edwards... The woman killed in 1992 was a known prostitute from Wiston-Salem. I have her name and details of the case, but won't publish them here, as the alleged killers are all long out of prison..., so we shouldn't stir the pot...

Hello everyone, I too am tired of people beating the dead horse so to speak. But I am also glad to see that some people are more interested in finding out the truth, instead of just being here to stir up the tales that aren't factual. Lilghost & I just gave ourselves & a teammate the grand tour of the Payne/Edwards Rd area a few weeks ago. I got to see the bridge that was built from the house boards & all. But I will say Michael, I have never been to the Lawson graves, it musta been someone else. LOL AnyWho, have a great time with your discussions & stop by our site too. csir09.ning.comHappy Haunting!

Darn, Bec, I could have SWORN you were with me and Lilghost and Sis out there! I'm sorry! If you want to go up there, let me know. I THINK I can still get permission, but not positive. A lot of people have been messing around up there at night, and I've heard they're getting pretty wary of strangers.
