Somebody out there fooling around, and decided to try to scare somebody. As I have repeatedly said, most of what goes on out there is just that. The vast majority of Payne Rd. stories are completely debunked. There ARE a couple of legit things, but they are largely around the old Edwards Property. The story that "Old Man Lawson" or "Emily Watson" are buried there is hogwash. It's possible SHE is, but Charlie was buried in the mass grave with his family several miles away off Brooke Cove Road.

Regarding the little girl that you said you saw, maybe this is something different, but this is my experience. I grew up in northern Forsyth County. Like everyone else, we used to go down to Payne Road at night, a bunch of guys and girls trying to scare each other.
A couple of years earlier, I had gone target shooting with my family down there. We went to that field that was right past the house and before the bridge. It was daytime, a Sunday in the fall. There were 6 of us, me, my brother, stepbrother, stepsister, mom, and stepdad. After we finished shooting we decided to explore the house (it was still standing then, the photo above gives me the creeps). Now, for those of you who don't know, here is the story of the house. The husband in the house had a wife and 3 children, all daughters. For whatever reason (I always heard he went just went crazy one night) he killed his family (I have heard he shot them and I have heard he killed them with an axe). After he killed them, he hung their bodies in one of the barns and then hung himself. Now, back in 1994 my friends and I went out there one night and opened one of those barns and saw the remains of 5 ropes hanging from one of the rafters. My friends lifted me up and I could just reach out and touch one of them, it crumbled in my hands (dry rot). I have to admit it freaked me out.
Anyway, we decided to explore the house. The house was in shambles. It looked pretty clear to me that people had been partying in there and then maybe homeless people had been squatting in it. Furniture was still in the house, sofas, mirros, tables, refridgerator, we even found clothes (I clearly remember finding a suit). After a bit my mom, stepdad, and stepsister disappeared. They thought it would be funny to hide and then scare us when we tried to find them. Well, we weren't going to fall for that so we decided to just wait outside in the frontyard as we knew they would come out eventually.
Now, the front door to the house had what is called a "French window", those old fashioned doors with a long oval shaped window in the door. The glass had been busted out years ago, leaving a oval-shaped hole in the door. We just sat there for probably about 30 minutes. Then, we noticed a little girl in house, we could see her through the door. The thing was, we couldn't see her face or anything. Quite honestly, it looked like a shadow with 2 white holes for eyes, but you could tell it was a girl because it seemed to have shoulder-length hair. Actually, it looked like it was just walking by went it heard us, because suddenly it stopped, turned its head toward us and appeard to cock its head or angle its neck as if to get a better look at us. Now, we thought this was my stepsister, so being the darling well-behaved children that we were we thought the best thing to do would be to hit her with a big heavy pine cone (there was a giant spruce tree in the front yard). My stepbrother picked up one of these spruce pines and lauched it through the door and towards the "girl". The thing took off, there one second and gone the next.
After about another 10 minutes or so mom, stepdad, and stepsister come out. We kept saying "We saw you, we saw you!" to my stepsister. She was 5-years old at the time. She said she had been "hiding under the house with Daddy" (in the picture above, you can tell there is space under the house's stone foundation, this is where they had been). My mom said she had been hiding upstairs in a closet, and I can tell you right now that what we saw was a young girl, not a grown woman like my Mom.
So what was it? To this day I am convinced that it was one of the daughter's who were murdered by that man. I can't explain it any other way. I will tell you that everytime I tell this story I get goosebumps (I have them now just writing this).
So that is my story. I haven't told too many people about this, but it is something that I will never forget. I never went back in that house again.

i googled payne rd and looked at the map. i was surprised that you can go down the road on google's street view. i only saw a few abandoned houses but it mostly looks like farms and farm houses. no cemetary. did have a bridge across a small creek. and a lot of logging roads. not very scary at all. i'm pretty sure i was on the right road, (google map) from the previous post. does payne road turn into bolejack road? and where does all the activity take place on the road. like i said at both ends of the road it looks like residential or farms. you should google the map and look at the satellite pictures. you can zoom pretty far in.
thanks jamie

Yes, Payne becomes Bolejack. The stretch everyone knows as the haunted Payne Rd. is actually called Edwards Road. The Edwards House is long gone, burning in the mid nineties. The story of Edward Payne is a false legend, as there was NO Edward Payne. The house was the Edwards Place, and was in the same family for generations.

Hi, my name is kristin and I lived on payne road for 11 years. It is haunted my I have seen and heard strange things while I lived there. there are several un marked grave yards up and down that road that are pretty creepy. There is one that gave my friends and I the scare of my life. Where the barns are right before the bridge, back about a fourth of a mile there is a grave yard and there are some pretty nasty things on the stones. also there is a pink pot that lays on a childs grave that is in tact, but when you walk past it; it brakes! Its crazy!!!!

Just remember, the vast majority of legends about Payne Road are not true, including the hallmark story of "Edward Payne," and the misplacement of Charlie Lawson onto it. There are some true things, but the most famous have been debunked by investigation and historical facts.

hey i'm 15 and i live in king, close enough to visit payne rd whenever i want. of course, me and my friends are still curious and get freaked out on payne rd cause teenagers are pretty dumb, we all know that. i've been in a lot of the old cabins on edwards and payne rd, but it was during the daytime. they weren't very creepy considering the sun was still up.
i've been down payne rd with my dad at night, down all the old trails and what not too, pretty scary.
last night though, me and some friends were out driving and we decided to take a trip to payne rd.
once we got on it we ALL started freaking out for some reason, we were all too scared to even stop the car or get out. [usually it's fun to get out of the car] but we just sped through the curves. we just wanted to get back to edwards rd so we could come out in rural hall.
but we missed our turn on edwards rd, and we couldn't find anywhere to turn around.
finally, we saw a little side rd on the right, a dirt road called "town fork trail" sounds like something out of the blair witch project or a horror movie, haha.
so we turn onto that road to turn around and there was an old bridge right in front of us, and we all start flipping out. no kidding.
and as soon as we're getting ready to back up and turn around this old truck comes flying over the hill so we haul ass and turn around and start heading back up the road.
me and my friend in the backseat are looking back at the truck which is now stopped in the middle of the road behind us turning around and thats when we really just fled outta there.

You probably ran up on some Klansmen, and they decided to try to scare you. At that point, you were actually on Payne Road. The alleged haunted house, haunted creek, etc... were on Edwards...

The road has simply been redone. The old bridge, I do believe, is where the scenes were shot for the Lawson Documentary in which they explained how the Lawson story got mixed up with the Payne Rd. legends. Edwards Rd. is the actual road where the Edwards (mistakenly called Payne) House once stood, and where the vast majority of the ghostly legends are supposed to have occurred. The road now called Payne ends at Friendship, and becomes Bolejack, which runs into Hwy 8 north of Germanton School. If you go right on 8, you will pass the newer Germanton Elementary School, and a couple miles beyond that, you come to Brook Cove Road on your left. The Browder Cemetery, where the Lawsons are buried, is in the woods by this intersection, and the Lawson Farm is down Brook Cove Rd., just at the intersection with Watts Road. The farm is fenced in now, and posted, so don't try to go in there unless you want trouble with the current owners...

I do not doubt you saw something. But as there was NEVER a slaughter of a family there (Edward Payne doesn't exist, and Charlie Lawson's crimes were miles away), I'm not sure what it was you saw. There are rumors of a demonic force summoned there years ago by people messing around with dark stuff, that supposedly manifested as a little girl, but I can't substantiate that. As I have said the only violent deaths I have been able to document out there were the rape and murder of an alleged prostitute in 1992, and a grandfather's suicide by dynamite in the mouth decades before that. All other tales of murder and suicide are apocryphal at best... Regarding the little girl that you said you saw, maybe this is something different, but this is my experience. I grew up in northern Forsyth County. Like everyone else, we used to go down to Payne Road at night, a bunch of guys and girls trying to scare each other. I forgot my password so I am logged in as a guest, but I posted before about me living on Payne Rd. I still live on Payne Rd. and my husband and his family has always lived on this road. His uncle lives a few houses down from us on Payne Rd. and we know everybody on this road.
There are some "creepy" things about this road, and some of the neighbors on the road have some pretty interesting stories to tell. I can't remember them all, but I will check. I do know the Lawson murders are completely unrelated. I suggest you all read "White Christmas Bloody Christmas" which is the true story of the Lawson family murders. I have read the book and I think they even made a movie about it or something like that.
There is also a house that the neighbors say was a devil worship house. This cannot be seen from the road as it is hidden back in the woods. There is a creek that runs behind this house and there are stones gathered in a circle with a large stone in the middle and from what I know they used to sacrifice animals there. There is also remnants of an old sawmill, and another shack looking building on the right side of the road. (if you are heading toward friendship road) These are all hidden back in the woods and cannot be seen from the road.
The old bridge which is the one that is talked about, was replaced when the road was paved.
I will say that there were many different people whom were killed down this road. My husband can give recounts of when they happened. I do know of another story about a man who killed himself down Payne Rd. by placing dynamite under his hat and blowing himself up. My husbands's uncle remembers this clearly. So there are some things that may suggest this road is haunted as there have been some brutal murders, rapes, and suicides down this road. I myself have never experienced any type of haunting neither has my husband. Some people say they have and swear by it. I just know there are some "creepy" things.
